  1. Wait.  You could be in limbo for about 3 years trying to get a rating if you go undesignated Seaman.  By doing that you also delay your opportunity to take the test for Petty Officer.  There are not too many jobs left in the Navy that you can strike for and this is what you will need to do to get a rating like AO.  Make the most of your time in the Navy and keep your "A" school for AO.  If you want to get some Navy exposure while you wait for boot camp, go hang out at your recruiting station learning more about the Navy and getting squared away with learning all your required things like your General Orders and Sailors Creed.  You can also help your recruiter and learn a lot in the process.  November is not that far away.  I know you are excited but going to boot camp with a rating like you have is very important and is the first step to the rest of your career.  If you start your first step with a broken leg you won't be too happy.  As a Seaman you could work anywhere and get stuck doing anything.  Long hours and not much reward.  E-4 and below have it hard enough as it is, don't make that time worse for yourself.  Good luck.

  2. Do not pass up the opportunity to become an AO. If you do, when you get to the ship and you are sitting over the side painting and all the AO's are walking off to go snow boarding or something, you will hate yourself. An AO is the best rate in the Navy. Period.

  3. Go in when you have the a seat in the AO school.

going in unrated it will be tougher to get into A school.

    So wait.

  4. Be an AO man dont go as seaman you will be cleaning the s*****r for a while if you go as a seaman  dont listen to that recruiter because Being a deck seaman sucks.

  5. What's more important to you - getting into the Navy or having a guaranteed school once you are in the Navy?  As an undesignated seaman, you can expect to be shipped to the Fleet soon after completing about 4 weeks of post-boot camp training.  Once you're there (most likely a ship although you could potentially be sent to sub school if you volunteer and do well enough in apprenticeship training), you'll be assigned to whichever non-engineering/aviation/medical department that needs bodies (most likely the Deck department).  This is a physically tough job, not always very mentally stimulating, but you will learn true seamanship.

You may be able to pick up an A-school while you're in boot camp.  If the Navy has spots open and you score well competitively, who knows?

If you really want in the Navy now, ask the recruiter if you can go in as an undesignated airman.  This option is similar to the seaman route, except that you will either be assigned to a squadron or to the aviation dept of a ship.  On this path, you could end up working with the AOs anyway!

In the end, you have to decide how important it is to you to know what you'll be doing in the Navy.  If you don't really care and you just want to serve, go in undesignated.

    Good luck!

  6. Jus wait trust me you would rather be an AO than a seaman...
