  1. There are three basic types of layers that you need to wear to be warm and comfortable on the slopes.

The inner layer (goes over your underwear) is long underwear.  Long pants, long shirt.  It's best if this layer isn't cotton.

The middle layer is for warmth.  You'll want to wear something fleece or wool.  Something warm and preferrably not cotton again.  Wear as many or as few middle layers as you feel you need depending on weather.

The outer layer is protection from the weather - wind and snow.  Pants and jacket.

I usually wear two layers as my middle layer, but will wear more or less depending on the weather.  Generally I wear long underwear, fleece pants & snow pants on my legs and then long undershirt, fleece jacket and snow jacket on top.

Avoid cotton whenever possible.  When it gets wet it's heavy and won't keep you warm.  "Cotton kills."

Also you'll want good gloves, a hat and probably some goggles.  Wear sunscreen also.

Don't carry anything extra in your pockets.  You might be falling and it'd suck to break your cell phone / iPod / camera.  I just carry a few dollars and some ID with me on the slopes.

Take a change of clothes for the ride home and you should be good to go!

  2. take more than you need, trust me... dont trust me because i am an experienced skier, because i am as far from that as possible, trust me as someone who was glad that Mom made me wear my jacket [lol silly, right?]... ill never admit it, but i would have been screwed without it.  wear a long sleeve shirt, a couple sweatshirts, and if its gonna be below 30 and windy, wear a winter jacket.. wear gloves, warm socks, dress in layers...even if you only plan on sitting and drinking sprite like i did today

  3. Think layers and avoid cotton at all costs because damp cotton is cold. Layers are important because it will allow you to adjust insulation for the conditions. The ultimate goal is to be comfortable. I tend to dress on the cooler side because I generate a lot of heat while skiing, but this can leave me chilly on a long lift ride when it is windy. My wife always dresses on the warm side.  I tend to gravitate toward thinner layers, so here is what I wear:

    Head-

Get a nice hat with a fleece band around the brow. I take a light weight (my Swix nordic hat) and a heavy weight for different temps. I am a bit bald, so I need the protection.  If it is likely to be super windy and cold consider a thin balaclava to protect your face, unless your shell jacket has a hood. In the spring I have a super thin beanie that I wear with sunglasses instead of goggles.

I mentioned goggles, and would encourage you to buy some inexpensive ones that have double lenses with vents so that you do not fog up. Snow creates a lot of glare that can give you a headache. If its cold, the goggles are really good for keeping your face warm, and the orange lenses help with contrast so that you can see better, particularly in flat light conditions (overcast days)

    Top Half -

    1. Next to skin I wear a very light silk turtle neck, but you could use a polyester turtleneck.

    2. Next I will use a zip mock turtleneck, but my wife likes a polyester crew neck under her zip mock. I like the zip because I can open the neck if I am a little warm, and they tend to look a little cooler than a regular turtleneck.

    3. In the cold weather I will wear a fleece jacket over this layer, but in the summer I find I am too warm with the fleece. I have two fleeces, one is light from Northface and one is heavier from LLBean. I also have a Scottevest Ultimate Hoodie, which I really like.

    4. Shell jacket - I have a Marker ski jacket with zip vents and powder skirt, but any breathable shell will be fine. Avoid thick parkas.  In the warm spring I will often dump my shell jacket for one of the softshells or windbloc fleeces that I normally wear for nordic.

    Bottom Half -

    1. Polyester sports underwear

    2. Long Johns - I take light, medium, expedition weight to cover all temps. Most of the time I am OK with light or medium.

    3. Snow pants. - I have Marker ski pants with vents and the boot gaiters. Some people like bibs, but right now I am using pants.

    Feet -

Get a couple of pairs of nice calf length ski socks in light and medium cushion. If you change out of them at night you can make a pair last several days.

I buy pretty much all of my base later gear from Sierra Trading Post and find they offer what I need at a great price.

Clothing aside, the secret for a happy ski holiday is TAKE AT LEAST ONE OR TWO PROFESSIONAL LESSONS. The number of people I see struggling to learn with a friend or relative is depressing. Ski lessons are not inexpensive, but they a wonderful investment.

  4. I went snowboarding yestarday and im pretty sore so were some sort of pads and long johns then jeans then ski pants on top DONT WERE JEANS OR COTTON ON THE OUTSIDE LAYER IT WILL KILL YOU!!!!!!!.  For your torsoe have an under armour or some thing wicking then an insulation layer like a fleece then your ski jacket and for your feet one pair of ski socks or wool socks will do good as for your head were a hat but for your first time were a helmet!! it will save your life concussions arent fun i've had 2 from lacrosse and 1 from football and 1 from baseball. so just dress worm without cotton NO COTTON SOCKS unless you want to lose toes.So goodluck and have fun
