  1. I would recommend looking at about.com; they have some of the best info on the language out there.  I-tunes also has some podcasts that I have used in the past and have found very helpful--there is one with Louis, who is very good (and best of all, it's free!).

Chatrooms are also a good idea, but be advised that French is a very alive language and that there are several levels of the language (argot abounds in French!); for example, the word "bagnole" is a familiar noun for "voiture" (which means "car").  This sometimes makes it a bit harder for a foreigner to penetrate the meaning of conversations, and also to know whether she is using the correct words for the correct audience.  When in doubt, go with the traditional language!

  2. CHAT ROOMS!! and just look up french grammer and go from there. 50% of french is english.. so you dont have to work as hard as you would think

  3. Look at the fastest and most effective way to learn French on this planet.

    http://french.learning-languages.info

You can speak French Confidently and Naturally in less than 8 weeks.

  4. On-line resources can give you good reference info on a language.  But to learn a language quickly so that you can use it effectively in another country, this will probably not be the best option.  Plus, you are bound to get distracted with surfing/chatting/e-mailing and not devote full attention to learning.

When I first went to France and needed to learn the basics quickly and without a class, I turned to audio CDs.  Specifically, I bought a series from Michel Thomas.  They are just CDs, no workbooks.  You just listen and follow along as Michel teaches a few students the language.  No note taking, no rote memorization.  It worked great and gave me that basic start I needed when I went to France.

It's not free, but it's not terribly expensive either.  Amazon has it for about 48 US$.  You might find a deal on ebay.  Or you could try to look for the mp3 files in other places.
