My friend and I are arriving in December and visiting another friend. We will either meet her in Madrid when we arrive then head over to Barcelona or spend a day in Madrid another in Salamanca and then two-three days in Barcelona. Also, how cold is it in December? What is there to do? Best Hostels? Best Nightlife?

  1. Is impossible visit Madrid in one day.

December is very cold, between 0ºc and 8ºc.

The nightlife in Madrid is nice, specially in Tribunal, Huertas and Chueca.

  2. I believe 5 days is a short time to visit this 3 cities. My recommendation is to choose 2 cities. My favorite one is Barcelona. The drive from Madrid to Barcelona can take approx. 5 hours. The weather varies in December but in general is mild (40s-50s F.). I visit Barcelona and Madrid on December 2005 and is a good time to go. The cities can be very crowded on the 31 / New Years day. On Barcelona check the 3 and 4 stars hotels near Plaza Cataluna this is the best place to stay. Try the Gravina H 10 is located in a quiet street but very centric ( check the rooms to the rear patio are bigger ). In Barcelona take the touristic buses is the best way to see the principal attractions like La Sagrada Familia, Parque Guell, The Olympic city, the water front, Montduic, the soccer stadium and the aquarium.

Drive carefully sometimes the cars are "flying" and fatal accidents are commons especially on long weekends.

  3. Most of your time will be traveling, so check the flight times and the time it will take to travel to and from the airports. Enjoy your time in these beautiful cities.

  4. Forget about Madrid. Ok its the capital of Spain but it's too big, too cold, too noisy... Salamanca is also very cold in december but is a very nice small city with a huge history behind it.

Barcelona is great! Not so cold in winter and very beautiful. If you look for "typical spanish" kind of place Barcelona is not the city. Barcelona's ambience is a mix of Spain, Europe, The Mediterranean, etc. It's the hippest city in spain and it was founded by the romans! Don't miss it and you will go back in summer!

  5. Not really .... you should take a look at a map and you will relaize that Barcelona is a long way from Madrid and even farther from Salamanca.  You would spend too much time traveling to enjoy the country....you should  focus on either Madrid or Barcelona and the surrounding area.

Madrid has the best nightlife in Spain...
