  1. I am an American woman and live less than 30 min. form Xalapa.  Xalapa is the capital of the state  of Veracruz and the center of government.  It is a city of about 3/4 million people...very developed, modern , and cultural.  It has several huge universities with students from all over the world.  The Univeristy of Veracruz alone has over 30,000 students.  Xalapa is known worldwide as a cultural city and famous for all kinds of music. There are many Americans and Europeans living in Xalapa.  And , by the way, Mexicans are from many backgrounds..many are "white', many  have Indian heritage, many are a mixture.  You cannot distinquish gringos from Mexicans walking down the st. by skin color...but you can by the way they dress!  Xalapa is not nearly as hot as Veracruz city...women do NOT wear shorts in public....it is extremely rare.  Dresses, skirts, capri pants are fine.  The beach is a little over an hour away...and there are miles and miles...no hotels on it...completely wild beach, no crowds.  There are many charming little towns nearby...like Xico...there are Americans and Europeans living in many of these little towns.  There are nice clubs with excellent music in Xalapa...and many young people who go to them.  Restaurants are excellent, too. There are huge , beautiful boulevards, and tiny, narrow, European style streets in Xalapa.  There are luxourious, wealthy neighborhoods, and very poor neighborhoods.   Be open to meeting many types of people , trying new foods, and learning new things.  I think you wil have a great time.

  2. You must mean Xalapa (also spelled Jalapa), it is the capital of the state of Veracruz. It is a well developed city home to the state university. There are a lot of things to do here, depending on your age and your interests. The beach is about 1 hour away.

Xico is a small town about 40 minutes away from Xalapa, there are beautiful waterfalls there and good sightseeing spots.

About the people, you will find we (xalapeños) come in every color, even light skinned.

You can e-mail me if you want to find out more about the city.
