  1. There are three basic types of dishes that I'm familiar with when it comes to sushi restaurants:

    - Nigiri: lightly vinegared rice molded into a 2" oval with a piece of raw fish placed on top.

    - Rolls: a sheet of dry nori (seaweed) topped with rice and either raw or cooked fish that is then rolled and cut into smaller pieces.

    - Sashimi: slices of raw fish with no other seasonings to accompany it.

    * I used "fish" to describe the meat because it is the most common, but there is a variety of other alternatives for rolls and nigiri like: eel, shellfish, shrimp and even egg!

Rolls are definitely the popular choice for many, especially if you are new to the sushi dining experience. Try maybe a California roll (crab meat rolled with avocado) or stick to dishes with fish and meat you're familiar with. The green paste they usually give on the side is called "wasabi" and it has a pungent taste similar to horseradish. Use it sparingly. Soy sauce is also provided in many places, but be careful not to over-soak the food.

Have fun ordering and don't be afraid to try new things! You can always ask the person serving you what they'd recommend too!

  2. california roll is the most popular. but the best tasting one is a philadelphia roll. It is amazing. and dont eat nothing green (wasabi). youll thank me later

  3. First thing to know if the are your friends then they will help you.

Sushi refers to the seasoned Rice.

The raw fish is called Sashimi.

You can order a fully cooked shrimp roll. And other assorted vegatable Sushi.

California Rolls are an americanized version of sushi but great for first timers. And many experienced sushi eaters.

Wasabi is Japanese Horse raddish and it can have quite a kick. Ask for some on the side and mix it with soy sauce use this as a dip when you want a kick.

  4. Be careful with the Wasabi paste. Don't put too much on your soy sauce.  The popular orders are the california roll or the Futo Maki.  Teka Maki is raw tuna rolled in vinigared rice and Nori (seaweed paper).   If you don't like raw then try Ebi sushi, (steamed shrimp on vinigared rice) or Tamago sushi (egg), or Kani Sushi or Maki (Kani is crab stick, actually fake crab since it is made from fish).  Order small quantities if available.  Usually they have pictures in the menu.  Don't be embarassed to ask the waiter.  It is better to let him know you are new to Sushi so he can guide you. You usually acquire the taste for sushi.

  5. I agree with Houssein D about the "green stuff"  Don't touch it.  The slimy orange stuff is shredded ginger root.  It's okay if you take it in small bites, but it is usually designed to follow the wasabi.  Sushi has a lot of rice in it.  If you are simply looking for the "raw fish" experience, try sashimi.  I'm sure they'll have that on the menu.  If you do that, go with the tuna, it's fantastic.  Don't go too outlandish and order eel or something.  Stick to something simple.  Read what's in it first.  If you think you can stomach that, try it.  See if you can order a mixed platter.  Then you can try different rolls to see what you like.
