You can never go wrong with a black cocktail dress.  It is conservative but classy and just a hint of s**y still being a female.  A strand of pearls or a simple classy necklace and your hair swept up.

We live in such a relaxed country! and really anything goes.

when they say black tie, it means you need to dress up. As everyone has already told you, you can't go wrong with black. but if you like colours this is a good time of the year to wear a chiffon dress and throw a shawl on top.

however you wait and see, every time I go to a black tie function I see women overdressed in long dresses and all ( too formal) and then others in simple shirts and pants or skirts.

It's all become acceptable so you'll be right.
