Sunday morning im laying in bed with a hang over, and it hits me, "I want to be a World Geography Teacher" i could actually visually see it in my mind. Im 24, got out of the Army after 5 1/2 long years, now im just doing maintenance. Its boring, and dull. Very DULL. I dont know a thing about what i have too do other than go to my comunity college. Thats pretty obvious i know, id just like to read some feed back from you guys about this career that a counselor wont be able to tell me. Thanks

  1. first word of advice: ask STUDENTS for advice. ones that actually care, not ones that tell you to watch movies every day. we know whats c**p and whats not.

in general, you want to be strict, but not mean. you wont have a problem with the strict thing what with being in the army, but youll have to make sure not to go over the line. above all, respect your students and CARE about them. dont treat them like four year olds cause theyre not. they have brains in their heads and most of them will know how to use them. teach them to care about the world around them. bring current events into your teaching and discuss ways to influence and better their world. becuase in a few years it will be their world, my world; not yours.

so anyways, geography pretty much sucks (in my opinion.. im not one for maps), so think of ways to make it fun. for example, have international food days, a chocolate day [becuase chocolate is the most international food.. research it =)] (youll never want chocolate again), international dress up days, ect.

    have fun =)

  2. Understand that geography is a small component of a Social Studies department.  You would need to get certified in Social Studies, and you would also be required to teach other courses, not just geography.  The Social Studies cert is pretty extensive, covering humanities (psychology and sociology), US and world history, economics, etc.

Also, as a previous answerer noted, SS jobs are scarce.  This should be shifting in the next couple/few years as people retire, however.

Just go into it knowing the full picture.  Educate yourself on what the job really entails and keep asking yourself "Do I still want to do this?" along the way as you learn more about it.

  3. try for a second certification in either Math or Science; there are a lot of Social Studies teachers out there looking for a job

  4. I am taking the class right now, I really like the class. It is really interesting. I wish my teacher did more fun things, he kind of gives us the work have us learn it and give us a test on something else than what he has us study. Honestly though it would be really cool to teach and especially if you made it more fun! If this is what you really want to do i say for for it!
