  1. Required vaccinations vary from region to region within the country.  It is always best to check with the proper authorities before leaving home.  Some shots are given upon arrival (yellow fever) but do not recommend as it takes 10 days for it to take effect and for that time you may be at high risk.

  2. When I went, I had to get Hepatitis A+B, Typhoid Fever, and Yellow Fever, as well as I had to take Malaria pills. I did an exchange, and at the time did not know where in Brazil I was going. Usually, the further north, and central you go, the more you need; I ended up being on the coast and really did not require malaria pills nor yellow fever.

Really, the best thing you can do is go to your local public health nurse, if you have one, or there are clinics which specialize in Travel Health. (I'm speaking from a Canadian perspective here.)

P.S Hepatitis A+B can be given in one shot; a vaccination called Twinrex is one, which is given in 3 doses over a period of six months.

  3. Brazil is bigger than US continous land, so it depends a lot on wich part of Brazil you are going to.

i.e. Amazonia is absolutely different from São Paulo, actually is a 5 hour non-stop flight (i guess).

  4. Are you going to live for an extended period or just a visit?  I moved here four years ago and got my vaccinations here, never been sick.  My advice go to your doctor, ask him or her what vaccinations you need and whether or not your allergic to any medications.  This is important to know because should you have an accident you will need to inform the doctors or nurses in Brazil what meds you are allergic to.  Should you be allergic to something get the translation or write the names down and laminate it and carry it with you.  A bit of advice, stay in the tourist areas, don´t draw attention to yourself, behave the way you do in your own country and you should be fine.
