  1. I've been to Cuba including Blau Colonial Cayo Coco  nine times and never got any shots and never had a problem.  In Cuba unlike a place like the DR  you can drink the water right from the tap although no doubt your resort will provide bottled water.  If you  still want a shot it would epend on where you live.  In Ontario Canada possibly a walk in clinic.

  2. Yes, you need one against comunism and another against the State Security. They might leave you in Villa Marista

  3. I myself, like Riki, never got a vaccination shot for Cuba. And there are no vaccinations required for Cuba at all.

If you are from Canada you have nothing to worry about because Canadians travelling to Cuba are under no health restrictions, and require no vaccinations.

The only concern is if you are coming from a region with cholera or yellow fever, in which case the CUBAN authorities will require proof of immunization.

It is always advisable to drink bottled water just because our systems won't be used to certain environmental things in other countries. Make sure the food you eat is cooked thoroughly (which goes for anywhere you are) and be careful in the hot sun if you're not used to it. That's when you might not always feel the best. Otherwise have a great time in Cayo Coco. It is just beautiful there!

  4. Though there are no "required" vaccinations for you to go to Cuba, there are "reccommended" ones. You should try to get Twinrix started before you go. It is Hepatitis A and B combined. It consists of a series of three shots, as you are going in a weeks' time you could start the accelerated dosing which means for example you get one tomorrow, one next week and the last when you get back. If you had time for the regular dosing it would mean one tomorrow, one in one month's time and the last six months after the first. Hepatitis A is spread through contaminated food and drink so basically as it would take is for someone that is carrying the virus to prepare your food with inadequate handwashing and you would be at risk. Hepatits B is spread through blood and body fluids. If you are going to be off the resort as well, typhoid vaccination would be a good idea. Typhoid is a form of salmonella which as you may know is a form of food poisoning, only typhoid is nastier. It is trasmitted through food and drink that are prepared by someone infected. Generally speaking if you eat only what is prepared on the resort, avoid ice cubes, drink bottled water, you should be alright. While in some places in Cuba you can drink the water it is generally not reccommended for Canadians as we are not used to their water...as you probably know whenever one eats or drinks something unfamiliar to their system there is risk of stomach upset. In Cayo Coco, you really dont' have to worry too much about water as they provide you with 1.5 litre bottle  of water per day in your room. I would reccommend you bring a little 'travellers health kit' with you as well. In your kit, pack a pain reliever such as acetaminophen (very expensive down there if you can even find it), pepto bismol, immodium should the pepto not work (for diarrhea), a few different size bandaids, and aloe vera gel (for sunburn). Don't forget to bring sunscreen as it is much easier to get sunburned down there. Also be mindful of the heat...many people mistakenly think they have some sort of foodbourne illness while there, but have just had too much sun/heat. It is hottest early afternoon so that would be a good time to relax in the shade or in your air conditioned room. I've been to Cayo Coco numerous times and had a great time every time. Sorry so long and detailed, but I do travel medicine in addition to communicable disease prevention/control and tracking.

Regarding a place to get vaccinated, go to the CDC website and look under travel health...there is a section there listing travel medicine clinics in Canada and the US.

Have a great trip! Feel free to email me if you have any further questions!
