Ask around in your community.   There must be some on going town project, or a church.  By volunteering locally you get a double bonus.  You do something good for your community and you get to meet some great people.

What's best for me wouldn't be for you. That's a subjective question. Some people like community service where they get to work with children. I don't really like children so I wouldn't want to do that. Some people hate to do administrative tasks; I really love to do administrative tasks, like answering the phone, or reviewing written materials, if I know that my contributions are going to help a cause I believe in.

I like to work for pro-choice causes, environmental causes, and organizations that are focused on women. Other people like volunteering with organizations focused on youth, the elderly, people with disabilities, etc.

So, in short, the only person that can answer this question for you is YOU.

If you see an organization that you would like to help, but don't see a volunteering opportunity posted by that organization, it's okay to call them and say you would like to volunteer -- they may have opportunities they haven't posted. Also, many organizations are open to your own suggestions for volunteering activities.

Remember that finding a volunteering gig can be like finding a job: you may have to interview several times before you are chosen for an assignment.
