Im going to dublin and need advice please!?

Actually i'm booking a hotel for my parents online and i am thinking of booking one north of the liffey in parnell street but my question is... does anyone know if its safe to walk around north of the river at night and is that why the hotels are cheaper at that side or is it just because you will have to walk a bit to the tourist stuff. i have been to dublin before but have not really been over that side yet, thanks!

Parnell street is fine but as other answerers have said it's generally regarded as being less safe than the southside.  This is partially snobbery but partially truth.  It really just depends what sort of holiday your parents are looking for.  If they are used to travelling then they should be fine providing they take all the sensible precautions.  Parnell Street is a main road and as such is normally fairly busy.  Many of the sites they will want to see are within easy reach of it but in saying that the parts of Dublin a tourist would want to visit are largely confined to a fairly compact area.

If you are worried about them some of the inner suburbs might be a better option-There are plenty of hotels and guest houses in Ballsbridge for example Bewleys Hotel is clean and a very reasonable €99 per night.  And the Mespil Hotel is really near the city centre 5-10 min walk on the Grand Canal- and again very reasonable.  Rathmines could also be an option and I disagree with the person who said it's 40 min walk from town-I would say more like 25. The Jurys Inns ( I know there is one on Parnell Street but there are others e.g. Christchurch) are also good value.

Mate, stay away from Parnell Street, it is not a safe area. I know a lot more about the southside than the north I'm afaid so I could recommend Rathmines as being safe yet lively - although about 40 min walk from City Centre. There is a Quality Inn in the city centre and a Jurys in the IFSC on Custom House Quay on the north inner city. Further out of the centre there is another Jurys near Croke Park. Or try Issacs on Store Street. In the inner city the north side is more dangerous but anywhere in a city can be dangerous if ur not a bit careful. U may want to stay in tourist areas like Temple Bar. There may be safety in numbers! Enjoy ur stay in Dublin.

If you are talking about Jury's in Parnell Street, it is perfectly safe.

As others have suggested if your parents take even basic precautions they will be fine.

The hotels are cheaper because of ridiculous notions like some on this thread have expressed and because they are about 500m further away from the big touristy places like Temple Bar and Trinity. The opinion of anyone who has been to Dublin even a couple of years ago is useless as the area has been substantially redeveloped.

Jury's in Parnell Street is a perfectly fine hotel.

its not that at all. its safe to work at night they just put it cheaper for the hotel to get more people or the hotel is small. not all the hotel around there is cheaper. just try few hotels and you will get few hotels that are expensive if you want the expensive hotels.

Hi  I stayed in Wynn's Hotel, Lower Abbey St. Dublin.  It was ideally located just off O'Connell St.  It wasn't expensive around £75 per night B & B.  We walked around Dublin at night and we found it to be safe, tell your parents to just be on their guard as you would anywhere in the world.  Tell them to take a tour bus, it's around 15 euros and you can hop on off  the tourist buses all day.  On O'Connell St. the post office is well worth a visit, it takes you back in time.  The Guinness Factory, Phoenix Park, all worth a visit.  Hope they enjoy themselves.

A bit of both as you suggest - the tourist stuff is mainly on the south side; the north side traditionally had a reputation as being less salubricious than the south side! Parnell Street is a main thoroughfare and, unless your parents are being stupid by flashing wallets/cash in public and expensive cameras, I think it's safe. This area has had lots of money invested in it, and is loosing its poor reputation.
