  2. You'll need a college degree and a high GPA; complete the MCAT, and then there are 4 years of medical school. A residency lasts about 4 years for many specialties, and then there can be additional training ("fellowship") to become a subspecialist such as a cardiologist, pulmonologist, neurosurgery. The fellowship can last another 2-4 years.
