That's for you to decide.

Find the right anime and character that matches you and be that character. Simple as that. Not only that, but you shouldn't buy your costume, many experienced cosplayers can tell that would be a fake. Try making your own or asking friends to make one for you. Good cosplayers make their own instead of buying. But when you need to buy something, make sure it's the wig or accessories. Wigs are a really help when you can't dye your own hair.

aw......thats no fun.... id wear my regular clothes...or an anime tshirt that you own....

cosplaying is expensive sometimes i get that....but hey you can always be ritsuka from Lovelesss....you only need ears and a tail.... youdont even need to look like the character.....

Go as your favorite character if you are planning to dress up. There are easy ways to make you own costume without buying one or spending too much money to make one. Try to make your costume as accurate as possible, the ones who do this stand out of the crowd.

If you don't want to dress up, but show you pride, wear an outfit with your favorite anime printed hugely.

Since you aren't cosplaying,  you may as well dress like you usually do. No one is going to the convention to see you, so there should be no pressure to look any particular way and there is no dress code. The main consideration in the way of clothing should be that you wear a comfortable pair of shoes because you will be doing a lot of walking and a lot of standing.

i'm going to my first anime convention tomorrow too! :D

since you dont plan on cosplaying, just wear really nice clothes (in case you want to take pictures with another cosplayer =P)
