We want to do some road trips to explore this region and want to stay in a location that is pretty and scenic, preferably a smaller town that still has the basic amenities.

Thanks!

  1. try Rottweil  ..

  2. Try the hotels near Titisee area near the Durbar shop.

  3. Most luxuriest place: Brenner´s Park Hotel near Badan Baden

  4. I grew up in the Black Forrest and I have a few favorite places.  In no particular order:  St. Peter, St. Maergen, Schluchsee, Titisee, Freudenstadt, Schoenwald.  These are some small towns with lots of Black Forrest feel to them.

Some of the bigger town you should visit are:  Baden Baden, Freiburg and Strasbourg (which is actually in the Alsace region in France).

I would recommend to look for Bed and Breakfast style rooming in local farms.  Lots of them earn some extra cash by offering guests to vacation in a traditional farmhouse setting.  Look for "Ferien auf dem Bauernhof" (vacation on a farm) or "Pension" (Bed and Breakfast).

Don't forget to pack your hiking boots (or just some good walking shoes).  The Black Forrest is best explored by foot.  They have TONS of walking and hiking trails.  If you get a chance, try to have lunch in an old-fashioned "Gasthaus" along the way.  They often offer rustic "Vesperplatte" (Snackplate) which typically consists of some hardy specialties like "Speck" (traditional Black Forrest Ham, not the stuff you get here in the States) and the world's best "Bauernbrot" (farmers bread).

Man, I am so jealous.  Enjoy our time,

    Stefan
