  1. The closest. You might like Capoiera and you might decide to go to Manhattan for a while but the travelling can really put your motivation off, i used to do Aikido and i travelled far to get there and eventually i quit because it was too far, unless you REALLY like capoiera even more than Muay Thai then u should go with Muay Thai

  2. without getting into the specifics of the validity of each art....

1- proximity is an issue, do you work in manhattan or have any reason to go aside from clubbing in the meatpacking dist. on weekends?  if not then what was said before is right, chose a place you will stick with. HOWEVER.

2- (I know I said I'd stay away, but I can't)- realistic training IS a huge factor, MT gyms are easy to find, and easy to find a good gym with realistic training methodology- unless that gym in the bronx is run by "nysc" or "equinox" or "balleys" (you get the point) then odds are its going to give you good training if fight training is your goal.

Capoeira on the other hand will whip your *** into shape- regardless of the program and its applicability to fighting. I have never seen a capoeistra that can apply thier techniques to fighting but I have never sought out capoeira or sparred against a capoeistra that I knew of.  however, whereas MT has an outlet (competitions under realistic rulesets) to self-regulate its quality, capoeira does not- so you need to search each school/program (in nyc there are a lot of fly by night type of capoeira programs, I see them advertised here and there) and make sure they are teaching in a realistic manner and training realistically against fully resisting opponents.

BTW- keep checking this link if you want to show up, show up and spar to test yourself etc. not sure when the next NYC one is, but they are in manhattan at the fighthouse on the lower west side.

it is actually very very uncommon but not unheard of to have an untrained person appear at these events to ask questions and get a closer look at sparring and style interaction.

  3. Brutal-B has highlighted the main point !!!

Motivation can be difficult enough at times and having to travel a greater distance to train could eventually drain all incentive to train, personally I'd choose Muay Thai solely due to it being in your area and maybe caporiera will start a club nearer to you sometime in the future.

Whichever you choose I wish you the best of luck and success :)***

  4. I think Muay Thai is a more effective martial art. Since it's closer go to it.

  5. Capoiera is useless in a real fight, if you want to waste gas and money learn it

  6. Muay thai is like Anderson Silva striking. I LOVE that style, so thats what I'd go with

  7. It's more of asking yourself what do you want to get out of it? Are you looking at it as self defense? Do you plan on fighting amateur or pro someday? Both will get you in darn fine shape, but capoiera is more of an art/dance than a combat effective martial art where as Muay Thai is the most realistic combat stand up art around. Either way you'll have sick stand up...

  8. if you want to learn how to fight right now...stick with muay thai.

if you want to learn a dance that eventually leads to fighting...stick with capoeira.
