  1. First you need to understand the reaction of combustion.  Gas has a non constant hydrocarbon form so I will use X/y

    This is from memory so you should confirm

    CxHy+A/F(O2+3.76 N2) <=> CO2+H2O + N2 +Byproducts.

    A/F is the air to fuel ratio

    I hope I do not have this backwards.

    If the A/F<1 The we will see hydrocarbons and NOx as the by prodicts.

    If the A/F>1 then you have to worry about CO and OH.

    To Combat this we install a cadylitic (sp) convertor.  It limits the by products.

    We also have an O2 sensor that will keep us at 1 to 1.

    The closer a car keeps its A/F ratio to 1 the better.

    Cooling the exhaust faster will also help but it is a littlbe bit impracticle.

    Today to much talk goes to CO2, that is not what I worry about.  I worry about the junk on the end.

  2. Modern cars that are properly maintained produce almost no pollution.  More than 99% of tailpipe emissions are harmless, consisting of water vapour and carbon dioxide.  The trace amounts of pollutants include:

    Unburnt and incompletely burnt fuel

    Nitrogen oxides

    Carbon monoxide

  3. -Buy hybrid cars

    -Car pooling

    -Only use cars if necessary

    -Take a bus if possible (car pooling)
