  1. Don't know how close this area is to where you are but check it out:

    Try asking some of the locals (particularly if you find a rock shop).  As I recall from my last visit to Switzerland they are pretty into rockhounding over there and there are rock shops a plenty.  If all else fails and you can't find a good collecting location I can almost guarantee you'll find some cool rock shops.  I got an awesome deal on a piece of dioptase in Bern.  But be careful of their opal--it's not too good and is overpriced.


  2. According to my source, rockhounding is called "strahlen" in Switzerland.  Success isn't confined to one specific region and might be had at higher altitudes where glaciers are retreating, places unfrequented by other people.  The website www.strahlen.org may offer more info.
