  1. Try a 600-750cc engine and a traditional frame. Easier to learn and more forgiving than crotch-rockets.

  2. motorcycles don't care how tall you are.  a 125 will drop you on your butt faster than you can say "oh".    The gearing is what does it.  All bikes for you are going to be somewhat scrunchy.

  3. Get a more upright riding position, neutral handling bike for your first. Then you will learn what you like and what your style.

    For laid back easy crusing:

Harley Davidson - Sportster 1200's are great starter bike and a used 2006 shouldn't run you more than 7-8 grand. Plus it will retain most of its price unlike Honda's and such.

For more sporty "crotch rocket" style bike:

Suzuki - GS500 are good and tall making it easier to sit upright on a forward style. Will cost a few grand less than the harley.

  4. You are too big for any 250 out there unless it is a dirt bike/enduro. Look at the SV650 Suzuki or Kawi Versys. Great bikes for a newbie your size.

  5. Street or dirt bike......

I would recommend a little bit bigger bike than a 250 if you are looking for a street bike. Maybe start with an old Honda CBR. I recommend a bike that is older and inexpensive to start out on so you don't spend a lot of money on something new and then drop it on the street. I bought my wife an old Yamaha 175 dual sport to learn how to ride (she is 5' 4" 110lbs) and she was comfortable on it within 20 minutes. Now she wants an 883 sportster. I am a big guy too and I ride a 96ci Harley.

If you are looking for a dirt bike, a 250 isn't bad to learn on, but you will out grow it quick. An XR 650 is a great dirt bike that is a 4 stroke so you can cruise until you are comfortable and get on it once you are ready.
