  1. There are many kinds of adjusters; do you mean auto appraisal? Liability/injury? Homeowners? Commercial?

Only some states require licensing - here in PA, you must be licensed for auto but not property. Many companies will also train you and pay for licensing. I have to disagree that it's hard to get into -- however, good companies to work for are certainly becoming harder to find.

Many insurance companies will hire you as a claim/customer service representative first, to handle basic phone claims, and then train you for either bodily injury or property claims handling if you show aptitude and willingness to learn. However, you do have to put your time in down in the trenches.

The larger companies (Allstate, State Farm, Nationwide) usually require a B.A./B.S.; smaller, more regional companies (Erie, Harleysville) do not always require a degree.

I'd recommend looking to get your foot in the door with a company as a CSR and let them train you.

You'll either love it or hate it. If you love it, you'll do it forever. Good luck!

  2. Yes, you need to be licensed.  Most companies won't hire you to work for them, unless you have a bachelor's degree.

It's a hard field to break into.
