Im just wondering with gas prices at $3.00 a gallon and probably going up why are all these people driving?

around in these big gas guzzling pickup trucks. Everyone around where I live here in southern Ohio drives a truck it seems. Even old ladies and people who could afford a nice car or Corvette or something. I mean if i had the money some of these people have I would drive a Vette or something cool. But a pickup truck that gets like 12 miles per gallon? Mabye everyone thinks there like Garth Brooks or something I dont know any help here?

Well think about it.  Homeowners have to haul stuff, it's a given.  I used to have a car but got tired of renting a truck at $60.00 a day for the dump runs, home depot trips, moving my daughters, etc.  when I needed one.  I'm compromising on a Jeep Cherokee. Also friends get tired of loaning them, and it's a lot of hassle when you need one and don't have one for the little stuff like getting a Xmas tree or something else spur of the moment.

MY pickup with a V8 engine gets 21MPG at 70 MPH and the A/C running. Modern trucks are much better than they were in the 80's, friend.

my f150 4x4 gets 20 mpg my last vette got about 16mpg

Obviously a post from an urban sort who doesn't look to the utility part of a vehicle.

Corvette = 2 seat vehicle with ZERO utility.

Pickup = 2+ seats with great utility.

Fuel economy isn't that different from one to the other, so the pickup wins every time in my book.

If you want to look at safety, put the truck and 'vette in the same accident, and see who "wins".

I drive a Suburban, and get all sorts of comments about fuel economy right up to the point that I point out the number of seats, that they are full of kids and do the basic math that is used to justify buses on the road, then compare it to their sports car with its 2-4 seats.  The "gas hog" Suburban wins that battle handily.

Anyway, to get back to the point, It's all about value.  Whether its payload, passengers, or status, That's what will determine what you will want to drive regardless of the gas prices.

What is funny are the people comparing gas mileage in a Corvette to a pick up truck.  The Corvette will get 30 MPG on the highway - what pick up truck will get that?  If you need to haul something you get a pick up, if you need to haul a__ then get a Corvette.

The Corvette does not have zero utility and you can haul your groceries home.  There is more room in the back of a Corvette coupe than in many cars trunks.

To each their own.  You have your vehicle, you get from point A to Point B, maybe have a little fun or maybe not.  Many people with a pick up truck need it for work, towing, etc.  I don't begrudge them having a pick up.  Some of them may have a Vette or other vehicle at home as well and don't always drive the pickup.

Meg - Corvettes get better gas mileage than many cars out there.  My Corvette gets better gas mileage than the Toyota Camry a coworker was driving.

It may open your eyes. In the simplest of terms,  your income should rise as time passes, just like prices. If it doesn't, you are a r****d.

My child rides the school bus now.I drive a small car so gas milage is good.When i do go out I make sure i do two things or more at time.Not just one.

Vettes are a little hard to haul things in.  Even the weekly groceries.  The trucks are more practical.  I have had both, now I only have the truck.

Some people have to drive.  I drive every day 40 miles one way to work.   I would think most people just don't drive around for no reason.

Reguardless of gas prices, you still need to drive to work, shop, dr appt, you name it, We all live with it, some of us, just cut back on other things. Oh and We have a truck, gas milage is around 19-20mpg... so no complaints here........

Think yourself lucky, most of Europe is paying through the nose. I the Uk they are paying £4.50 a gallon or $9 a gallon!!

People have high paying jobs that they have to go to.

And if they don't have public transportation, they resort to their cars to get them to work to make money.  And the money they make doesn't make the high price of gas bother them.

I, on the other hand, don't have a job and don't drive much.

I drive a modest car that gets great gas mileage. I don't care about cars. There are other things that are more important to me and life is about trade offs.

Obviously you know nothing about cars. Corvettes don't get that great of gas mileage; they are a sports car with a big, powerful engine. Some people have to drive trucks because of their line of work, or they like having all the extra hauling space. I don't know what Garth Brooks has to do with pick ups, either.
