1. this URL has Legal Requirements and Registration in NSW .... Annotated links to information on home schooling in Australia in particular .. good luck

  2. Check out HEA (Home Education Australia) @ http://www.hea.asn.com.au They are the national organisation for home education in Oz.

Registration (as a home educated student) in NSW:

    | It is suggested that parents read Division 6 of the Education Act 1990 (sections 70 to 74) – "Registration for home schooling".

The Office of the Board of Studies (OBoS) have been appointed by the Minister to oversee the registration process. Parents can contact the OBoS on 02 9367 8395. An application form will be sent, to be completed by the parent. After this has been submitted, an Authorised Person will contact you and arrange to interview you in your home.In general terms the interview will seek to establish that you have educational objectives for your child and resources to ensure that these objectives are carried out.It is suggested that parents wishing to apply for registration in NSW read the articles on programming provided in the Resources area of the hea website ( http://www.hea.asn.au ).

Registration is generally recommended for a period of between three months to a maximum to two years. After two consecutive two year registrations parents can apply for registration by documentation, in which no interview is needed.

The OBoS (ph. 02 9367 8395) have published an Information Package, which details issues related to registration. |

Saying all that though [and this being Australia, lol!] it is estimated that as few as 7% of home-educating families in NSW ever bother to register - although OBoS is charged with registering home-educating families, it has no mechanism (and no authority) to investigate homeschoolers who are not registered.

HSLOs (truant officers) *must* have your name and personal details *BEFORE* they are allowed to approach the OBoS to ask if they have any record of you being home-educated and, providing your Mum de-registers you properly from public school (or you've never attended a public school in NSW), it is pretty much impossible for them to find out the necessary details about you in order to check to see if you're registered as 'home-educated'.

In addition, the NSW regulations contain a provision for your parents to register as "conscientious objectors" to registering as home-educators. Although given that, if they do so, they are still registering (just in a different form) I reckon the only real reason for putting themselves on that list would be to make the point about them holding objections to mandatory registration of home-educators (!!!) Needless to say I reckon that only us Aussies and the Irish could come up with a system like that one, lol!

Minimum subject requirements for home-educated (high school aged) students in NSW are: English, Maths, Science and PSHE.

NSW makes no comment on how those subjects should be studied or to what level or depth though. In fact their only comment on their own curriculum requirements are that: they are deliberately very general and "home educators should have no trouble fitting their own education philosophy into the requirements using various education styles (eg natural learning, classical education etc)".

Beyond the official stuff, hea keeps a list of home-education support groups in NSW (covering all Metropolitan, Rural and Remote areas) @ http://www.hea.asn.au/resources/results_... Sorry, I couldn't be more locale-specific as you didn't include any indication in your post of where in NSw you are.

Additionally they have a list of home-education resource providers @ http://www.hea.asn.au/resources/default....

(the list includes places, such as Liverpool Ice Rink, that have reduced entry fees for home-schoolers during the day while other kids are at school).

HEA also provide their own home-education brochure containing heaps of info that you/your parents might be interested in. You can order a copy @ http://www.hea.asn.au/abouthe.asp

HEA also organise various educational and social events such as:

    Bike riding trips

    Bush walking

    Camping trips

    Choirs

    Clowning and circus skills workshop

    Concerts

    Conferences

    Cooking

    Craft activities

Get togethers of several home-educating families in private homes

    Picnics

Sports carnivals – swimming, cross-country, athletics

    Surfing

Tutoring - either individually at home or as a group somewhere like your local community hall

Visits - for example to art galleries, museums, fire stations, the RFDS etc

    Water skiing

    Writing workshops and much more.

HEA can also help you organise work experience placements if there's a career you particularly want to have a go at.

Hope this helps; if there is anything else you/your parents want to know then let me know!
