perfect for my family. i was thinking african grey because they're smart. but they dont cuddle?? the one i held was quite mean. im looking for a nice cuddly, cute, smart, colorful, friendly, bird. one that doesnt p**p much either. but a big one. please dont say cockatiel because i have two at my moms house. but my dad is looking for a bigger one. he might not have a ton of time to play with it but he still can. i heard some need 2 hours of attention. does it matter if its at night?? or spread apart.. anyways DONT give me any list of birds that are smaller than a cockatiel. thanks!

  1. brucemoko is right about everything.

Also I do NOT recommend an Eclectus until you thoroughly research the bird first. Although they're a family bird, most are not cuddly & they require a healthy natural soft food diet & a great deal of interaction time. Read up on them before you consider this bird please

No AG's aren't cuddly. There is no such thing as a bird that doesn't p**p much. If you don't wanna clean up the mess, you probably should not have one. Even if the bird poops less you may still have a bird that is extremely messy with food. Regardless of what you get, expect mess & expect to have to clean it every day.

2 hours of attention is the VERY minimum & I'm talking parrots that're smaller than the cockatiel, the ones you don't want. If you want larger parrots you will need to put much more than 2 hours a day into giving the bird attention or you will have a screamer, plucker or badly behaved bird.

If you're serious about a larger bird than a cockatiel you're going to have to rethink the hours you're prepared to offer that bird. No 2 hours is not enough.

  2. Sorry, but if a bird is alive, it's going to p**p a lot because of its fast metabolism.

  3. The bigger the bird the bigger the p**p.  Cockatoos are cuddly birds, they are also demanding and a bit noisy. I have an African Grey that doesn't have much to say, I have had him for 10 years, and he is the most cuddly bird I have.  All big birds need attention, they need expensive toys, big expensive cages. Having their wings clipped and toenails clipped.  They are not here to entertain you, you are their slave, they are fun but they are noisy and messy little pigs. There cages should be cleaned every day, gee they live in it. There water needs to be changed every day. They need fresh fruit and veg, not just seed, Pellets can also be incorporated into there diet.  Think twice three times before getting a big bird, do your research and talk to people that have them.

  4. A MALE Eclectus Parrot.  Males are very adaptive to families, the females are not usually as sweet and nice.  They are smart, beautifully green, but all large parrots require attention.  All birds p**p.  Make sure if you get a large parrot it can receive adequate attention.

The green one is the male.

  5. Maybe you should try a sun conure or an indian ringneck, i think both are pretty nice, colorful and smart but a ringneck might be best for you, good luck :]

  6. All birds p**p much because of their matabolism being so fast.  A medium sized bird that is colorful, playful, smart, and cuddly would be a blue crown conure.  And if you don't know what kind of bird this is, think of the movie Paulie, that was a blue crown conure.

Also you could look at the Blue Head Pionus, these are very very colorful birds.  They are also smart, but not known for their talking abilities.

But if you are really devoted to getting a big bird, that's very colorful, smart, and cuddly, you could look at the Hyacinth Macaw, but be prepared to pay $10,000 for the bird.  And no, that was not a type o, they are ten thousand dollars, but if that's what you really want, then by all means.

  7. "Bigger bird" and "doesn't p**p much" don't really go together.  Bigger birds have bigger p**p, so I'll only recommend parrots on the smaller side of medium.  And you'll want to avoid lorikeets, which are even messier.

If cuddly and colorful are both important, you might consider a senegal, sun conure, or crimson-bellied conure.  The conures are similar in size to cockatiels, but with more of a "big-bird" attitude.  The senegal is a bit larger but shorter (it has a short tail).  Of the three, the senegal is the quietest.  see:

You should also look at a pionus, which is a little larger and also fairly quiet.  see http://www.pamperedpeeps.com/pionus.htm

All of the above are known for being relatively cuddly.  Some other reasonably colorful birds not noted for that, but which will tolerate a degree of it, include:

Yellow-collar macaw (but a bit loud)

Alexandrine parrot/parakeet (also a bit loud),

quaker/monk parrot (good pets, but illegal in many places)

small amazon such as a lilac-crown (loud)

    galah (loud)

Yes, any of these will want hours of attention (though they can survive on somewhat less if they have lots of good toys).
