  1. Call the book store at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces New Mexico.  The offer a Bachelors Degree in Golf Management so I would guess they must have a couple of books on the subject.

  2. I am not sure where you are, but if your local golf association is as active in the industry as the NCGA (Northern California Golf Association) they might be able to send you the right direction.  IF, by chance you are in the NCGA area, I suggest you contact them for the following:

    NCGA Internship Program

    The program is designed to train qualified individuals in the basic skills needed to become and effective assistant Superintendent and eventually a first-class head Superintendent.

    Each intern, during the two-year program, will be required to complete a variety of tasks from ten areas of instruction or blocks. The amount of time an intern spends in each block of instruction depends on previous experience and the needs of the local Superintendent.

    The ten blocks of instruction are:

        * Course Introduction/Section Responsibilities

        * Equipment Operator

        * Turf Management

        * Irrigation Systems Management

        * Maintenance of Equipment

        * Managerial Skills

        * Course Projects

        * Environment Awareness Project

        * Daily Course Maintenance

        * Tournament Preparation

    After each block of instruction is completed, an evaluation form must be filled out and submitted to the Director of Turfgrass Services. The intern will have three evaluations a year with the host Superintendent and the Director of Turfgrass Services.

    The intern will also attend the National GCSAA conference during their tenure. This professional meeting as well as other educational opportunities will be provided at no cost to the intern.

    Qualifications

    Educational Requirements

    Must have at least two years of college (or be enrolled in or working toward a degree) coursework that includes courses in agronomy, horticulture or turf management.

    Work Experience

    Have one year of golf course experience or similar type of outside work history (i.e. landscaping, irrigation installation, etc).

    Golf Awareness

    Should be able to play and understand the game of golf

    Compensation

    Approximately $30,000 a year plus benefits

    The intern may need to relocate to an assigned golf course within the boundaries of the Northern California Golf Association (Visalia to Oregon).

    Interested persons should contact the Director of Turfgrass Services at the Northern California Golf Association for more information:

        3200 Lopez Rd.

        P.O. Box NCGA

        Pebble Beach, CA 93953

        831-625-4653

  3. Not aware of any book which states how a golf course is to be managed. There are two things you can do. 1) Consult with the manager of the golf course nearest you and learn first hand what is required to manage a golf course. 2) Write to the USGA in Far Hills, NJ to see if they have information. There is a club manager's association which I do not think is strictly for golf courses. They may be helpful.
