  1. The SW.460 can also fire .454 casull and the far more forgiving (and cheaper) .45 long colt. I would steer clear of the SW X-frames and purchase a taurus raging bull for hundreds of dollars less. The slight gains in velocity and bullet diameter of the large frames aren't worth the $

  2. get the 460, it is a more versatile gun. In addition to being able to shoot the .460 S&W Magnum, this gun will also fire the .45 Colt and .454 Casull.

If you can only afford one for now, my motto is to go with the more versatile gun. you can always get the .500 Magnum later.

  3. The S&W 500 would have more kick, I would also recommend a .44 magnum.

  4. "kick" is a combination of three things. The weight of the slug, the amount of powder sending it downrange, and the weight of the gun.  500's are slightly larger, but the magnum has more powder. In this case I'd say the 'kick' is about the same wrist turning, thumb numbing over kill.  If you really want to fire a large bore pistol, try a 45-70. That way you can use it in either a pistol or a rifle.

  5. I suspect you are way out of your league.

Start with a 357 revolver, and shoot 38 specials through it.  Once you can consistantly handle the hottest 357 loads, step up to a 44 magnum.

Once you can handle a 44 magnum, then we can talk mega-revolvers.

p.s. between the 500 and the 460, 460 hands down. It recoils less, shoots flatter, is better for hunting, and the gun can fire 460 ammo, 454 casull ammo, and 45 long colt ammo

  6. It depends on what you're looking to do, if you simply like to shoot huge pistols, the .500 S&W is amazing.  You could also pick up a Wildy magnum, they're made in the next town over from me in Brookfield, CT; it was used in Death Wish 3, it is absolutely ridiculous.  I'm also a big fan of the .454 Cassull.  Good luck.

  7. I prefer Rugers because they are built heavier.

  8. I have to ask why?

.357 will drop a bear, hog, anything

A 500 or 460 could break your wrist.

Have you fired a 45 Colt cartridge out of a revolver?

The 500 and 460 have more rise and recoil.

If you want to go extreme just to go there look at this monster

I prefer my handguns to be usable.

  9. 500 Magum

  10. Forget about it.* They are not practical, and you will not use them much if at all.* Your best choice which has been tried, true, tested, and proven is the 357 Magnum.* It is a no-nonsense man stopper.* Using 125 grain jacketed hollow points for ammo.* You can also shoot 38's in it also.* You get two (2*) handguns for the price of one.* Reconsider your choice.*

  11. The S&W .500 mag would have the greater recoil.

  12. Smith & Wesson makes a 460 that you also fire 454 casull and .45 long colt from, so i would go with that. Ive shot the 460 and the recoil was pretty intense but if handloaded it can be reduced. The 500 would have more kick and more stopping power, but the 460 is all you need plus its more versitile.

  13. Unless you are looking to hunt elephants, there's no real need for anything beyond a .44 Magnum.  That being said, the .460 is  a versatile revolver as you can fire the Magnum Rounds, 45 Long Colts and 410 Shotgun shells from them.  Most people find that the Super Magnums have too much recoil for their wrists for more than a few shots.  Yeah, it looks impressive to have these monstrous hand cannons but they are too heavy to carry in the field without a shoulder strap and you better kill what you aim at with one shot because it will take a d**n near forever to setup a follow up shot.  Also at $1 per shot, it gets expensive just to make a real loud BOOM.

The S&W is a good choice as are some of the others; the Magnum Research BFR comes to mind. As well as the Ruger Super Redhawk in .454 Casull.
