  1. The Nikon 55-200 is an excellent choice and is just as sharp as the 18-55. They also make it with VR, vibration reduction, for a few extra bucks.

  2. Consult kenrockwell.com. It has excellent reviews of lenses and cameras, with realistic comments on price vs. quality.

No, I'm not connected to it in any way -- I just use it alot.

  3. Ebay...you can almost everything there!

  4. The 18-200mm VR lens is the perfect choice - it's a little more expensive than the 18-135, but it's a lens that'll never come off your camera is it's brilliant for almost any photo task. It's Vibration Reduction (VR) is terrific, giving an equivalent of a shutter speed four stops faster.

The 55-200mm is also good if you are on a tighter budget, especially the VR version. However, if you don't like the idea of switching lenses often, the 18-200mm is perfect, but if it is out of your budget, the 18-135 is a great performer as well.

However, the D40 doesn't have an autofocus motor in it, so be sure to look out for "AF-S" lenses which indicate it has a motor inside.

    Good luck!
