My budget is around 8-10k a month. I have a house trained dog. I would not mind renting a room in a house or an apartment. I currently live in a house in Seattle with 3 other people. Do people share houses in Manila? I am responsible single male teacher from abroad but I am not looking for a girlfriend or boyfriend for that matter. Just a safe place to live, preferably close to Legaspi village where I will be teaching. Any advice would be appreciated.

  1. It's quite a refreshing change to answer a question from a foreigner who isn't/hasn't trolled the country for a "girlfriend", so first and foremost, welcome to the Philippines.

Most likely, your budget will restrict you to sharing a home in Makati. It is very expensive there unless you live at its perophery. If you are a teacher at, presumably an international school of some sort, your best bet is to begin networking with fellow teachers from other lands who also work at the school--as they most likely also share a home to meet their similar budgetary constraints.

Want to live by yourself and willing to venture further out? Remember that a first timer to the country from the West may not be comfortable living in a non A/C'd home with no hot water, which is most of what you will find outside of Makati that would fall within the 8k range.

  2. Oh, once you get to your workplace, that's the time you can truly find a nice home sweet home for you to stay.  Your co-teachers will surely find one for you.

Hope you will enjoy your teaching job here. Oh, be sure to bring MOSQUITO REPELLENT! Take care and GOD BLESS!
