  1. Not many states still have projects.

If you are low income you can apply for section 8 housing, where rent will be 1/3rd of your income.

There may be a waiting list of 2-5 years for you to obtain it though.

It is hard to help when we do not know the situation.   What is "forced out" mean?  Evicted?  Spouse trying to toss you?

  2. Income based housing has waiting lists in most areas.  Some areas are not even taking applications, since the waiting lists are so lengthy.

You can inquire to the housing agency in your area, but do not be surprised if you are told about a waiting list.  Sec 8 funds are not unlimited, and they are disbursed to the next in line.

  3. I don't know about where you are from, but the low income housing around here has a waiting list. It takes at least 6 months for you to be contacted that there is an opening. Do you have family that can help you out for now? Call around to your local welfare office, Red Cross and Salvation Army and see what services are available in your area.

  4. You need child support from your child's father, and you need a job.  Can your parents, siblings or other family members help you temporarily while you job-hunt?

As for subsidized housing, demand far exceeds any availability and priority goes to elderly and disabled.  In some places, the waiting list for Section 8 housing is 5 years.  And you have to have an income -- you have to pay 1/3 of income and the federal govt subsidizes the balance.

If you don't sort yourself out in a hurry and get to work, you are going to end up in a homeless shelter with a toddler, and that is not a suitable environment for a child.
