  2. First of all try:

    Screech

    The Professor

    J.J.

    Wilma

    (unpronouneable)

et. al., ad. infinitum, ad. nauseum

Secondly, maybe include a wee tid-bit about your folks, like hey are they alive?   What were/ are their first names?

    Go Scotland.

  4. First rule of genealogy.  Never assume that everyone with the same surname as you is related, because that just isn't true.  Even if your name is, in genealogy circles, comparitively rare, the odds of someone with your surname being a relative is the same as some random guy in the street.

If you start thinking like that, your research will become completely skewed and worthless.  My own name is pretty rare in genealogical circles.  Online databases like the one at the National Trust site tell me there are about 1500 people in the UK who share my name, but I am by no means related to all of them.  Only a handful are close relatives.  Many aren't related at all, or so far back in the mists of time as to be unproveable.  Most people I've found on sites like Genes Reunited who are distant cousins have all kinds of surnames.  I wouldn't worry about trying to find people with just one name.  Start looking for all your relatives, not just searching for a surname because it just won't work.
