  1. To be a OB nurse:  4years of nursing school at the bachelor's level (BSRN) and pass the boards.  Then either a new grad position in L & D or work med surg for a year & try to transfer into L & D. Pay depends on locale but nursing pay is relatively good.

To be a OB/GYN MD: bachelor's degree in a pre-med curricula; 4 years of med school. 3-4 years residency in OB/GYN. Pay for MDs is extremely variable & depends on a wide range of factors including patient load, private or group practice or HMO, hospital affliation, billables collected, overhead expenses, malpractice premiums, school loans, area of country etc.

  2. It's not easy to get into because a lot of people don't make it through pre-med, medical school, internship, residency and finally their specialty.  How much you're paid and how many jobs are available depends on your location and whether or not you're willing to relocate.  Once you've made it through all the schooling and are settled in, your pay can be very substantial, sometimes in the 6-figures range.  But to be honest, the first maybe 10 years, you'll be paying off student loans and will have to work to establish yourself, and possibly go into private practice.  So if you're willing to go the distance, it can be very rewarding.
