  1. When you say you want a camera that can "... take good night shots..." I must guess that you mean without a flash. If you will explain in more detail exactly what you mean then perhaps I can answer more intelligently.

  2. Cameras are designed to capture light, not darkness. Night shooting with no flash or other lights is a weakness of all cameras. What you want is, quite frankly, unrealistic. The only type of camera that would give you decent night shots is an infrared night vision camera, costing thousands of dollars.

Let me add that I have used several film and digital cameras, point and shoot as well as SLR. In 25 years, I have never come across a camera that does night shots perfectly.

  3. Check out the Canon G9 .. it's very good with night shots.  However no compact digital is going to give you the same quality as a DSLR, the sensors are much smaller.

  4. I would suggest looking for a used professional SLR Digital Camera. The SLR cameras are so fun to shoot with...you can get different lenses for them...I suggest trying a cheap generic fisheye...It is fun :-)

You can buy an expensive professional SLR Digital Camera that sold for thousands a few years ago for a few hundred bucks today. They still have the same great quality they did when they were thousands of dollars...

My recommendation is a Canon...maybe a d30 or even a d10 is a great camera...also really affordable now...but the choices in accessories is great! Battery grip, flash, filters and lenses...so fun to play with....It has a nightshot mode for amazing shots....it fires the flash but leaves your shutter open for a few mil-seconds longer to capture the surrounding light...they look beautiful...great for fireworks or Xmas lights...

It is a great way to get a great professional digital camera that takes amazing shots...they are better than the consumer digital cameras. They are also alot more fun to use with different lens choices.....

I purchased 2 cameras from http://photographersadvantage.com and have been very pleased with my new found hobby!

Good luck and happy shooting :-)

  5. There is no compact P&S that is going to give you dSLR quality night shots at present.  Even the Sigma DP-1 which should (in theory) be as good since it uses a APS-C size sensor is usually rated as poor, since it has trouble focusing in low light.

Take a look at the Olypus E-420.  It is the world's smallest and lightest dSLR at the present time (according to Olympus), and with the pancake 25mm lens that they now offer, you have a camera only slightly bigger than the advanced Point and Shoot camera, but the quality of a dSLR.
