There are three different Types:

If you want a great website, go to projectorpeople.com. They are the best in customer support and offer the lowest prices on the internet.

CRT - Kind of old but they produce the best darks (Black looks more natural) They are very heavy and expensive. Great projectors though Run a couple grand

DLP - The runner-up. DLP projectors usually use a light wheel and they have improved contrast over LCD. Drawbacks include the rainbow effect (Hardly seen nowadays). You can get a beautiful picture for 1,000-2,000.

LCD - Bottom of the chain technology. More common in offices. I suggest staying away from these projectors.

SIM2, Runco are considered the best out there.  Sony, Optoma make decent 1080p projectors as well - but nowhere as good (and nowhere as expensive).

If you REALLY mean the "best" you are talking $30,000+, so start at the 1st link and look for SIM, Runco, etc. (also look at the Ultra high end gear forum too ... but you'll have to tease out the projector threads). If you want the ultimate (at the moment) look at the Sony SXRD 4K digital projectors ... $100,000+ (although where you would find movies I'm not sure ... probably commercial distributors)

On the assumption you are talking about the best for a reasonable price have a look at the comparative review at the 2nd link. In particular look at the JVC and Epson models.
