Im looking to transport frozen expressed breast milk an hour and a half and put it in the freezer when I get there. Im going away for 9 days and leaving my 8 month old with my mum and ill be expressing breast milk for than. Iv heard that I shouldnt use ice to keep the breast milk forzen because ice will thaw the breastmilk quicker, Iv also heard that i should put crumpled up newspaper around it to insulate it and use frozen gel packs.

Any other tips?

  1. Breastmik should never be thawed and re-frozen.

However .. if you are only gone for an hour and a half travelling, it should be fine in a small cooler with gel packs.

Here are some helpful links that I found on storing breastmilk and one on travelling without the baby - how to keep milk supply up, etc.

  2. YOU CANNOT FREEZE, THAW AND REFREEZE BREAST MILK!!!! The milk has to either remain frozen the entire time or be freshly expressed and kept cold. The best plan of action would be to keep fresh milk cold in ice.

  3. It will not unthaw in an hour and a half. Use an insulated cooler and freezer packs, but the frozen milk in an insulated cooler should be enough to stay frozen for the short trip.
