  1. yes!

    Find the value of x that will make the equation true.

  2. It means find the value of x (ie. x = something).  For your example, it does indeed mean x = -4/3.

  3. 3x plus 5 equal 1

        minus 5 from both sides

    3x equals -4

    then divide 3 from both sides

    x equals -4/3

    so u are correct

  4. It means finding out what number x equals

    to do that subtract 5 from both sides of the equation

    3x +5 -5 =1-5

    3x = -4

    Divide by 3 to get just x

    3x/3 = -4/3

    x = -4/3

  5. ok you need to get x on one side alone.

    so subtract 5 on each side

    3x=1-5

    now divide by three on both sides

    x=-4/3

  6. picture x as being an empty box. [_]

    in this box belongs a number.

    what is that number?

  7. 3x + 5 = 1

    3x = -4

    x = -4/3

    You got it right, if you substitute -4/3 for x, you will get a true statement

    3(-4/3) + 5 = 1

    -4 + 5 = 1

    1 = 1, this is true, so you know you have the right answer

  8. Yes! They want to know what X is, by itself:

    3x+5=1 - - - >Subtract 5 to both sides

    3x = -4 - - - > Divide both sides by 3:

    x = -4/3
