Question:

Im moving back to ireland from the UK and wish o aviod paying import duty on my possesion?and advice or tips?

I'm just begining my reitrement and am moving back to ireland which i left 25 years ago and moving into a house i have owned there for years. i have hired a truck to take my possesion but was warned by the company that i maybe stopped at customs and have to pay import duty. is this true or nonsense so i would pay for a driver at almost £1500?i would be greatful for any relevant advice or experience anyone has regarrding the issue. Thanks.

  1. Like MLT1973 said you wont be liable for Import duties on youre Household Effects. You might have to make an Inventory of youre Possessions for the Customs to check on . So long as youre not bringing in a load of New Suits or Tons of Alcohol or Tobacco or dozens of Televisions you dont have to Worry. There main Concerns is of you Smuggling in Drugs Guns or Tobacco.Contact the Irish Embassy  for Information and or look it up on the Internet. W.W.W. Irish Government .ie

I'm speaking blindly so take proper advice but it seems unlikely off the top of my head.  Ireland is part of the EU and the law by which all members are bound allow for the free movement of goods.  Import duty does not apply.  It could be that the taxes being refered to relate to some other legislation but not entirely convinced that they'd relate to import duty.
