  1. Just as the others suggested avoid at all costs jane and finch and even those apartment complexes around the school. They definitely arent the best or safest choices. You can look at the apartments at jane and rutherford. That is in vaughan maybe 15 mins away from york. Its also right beside Vaughan Mills mall, and Highland farms (grocery store). You can also take the YRT which will take you straight to York so you dont have to pay for parking as parking costs an arm and a leg (I was there for 45 mins and it cost me 4$) There aren't any apartments in Vaughan but if you can find one there check it out, because it is safe and there's tons to do in Vaughan!

  2. You definitely want to avoid the Jane and Finch area near the York campus, that area is considered among the most dangerous in Toronto. The area immediately to the east and north of campus is largely industrial. As a result, there are few areas that are within walking distance of campus.

For $500-750 you might be able to afford a basement apartment in North York somewhere, or perhaps get a share of a house with some other York students. The area around Yonge Street between Finch and Sheppard is quite nice and vibrant, but it may be out of your price range. Most of North York is suburban however and you will need a car to get around for the most part. Hope that helps.

  3. I live in an apartment south west of York. It's a five minute walk to campus, a 2 room apt. costs $1000 a month thereabouts (find a roomie, nothing here is cheap). Safetywise, I've lived here for 2 years and have never had a problem, neither has anyone I know. I know of one mugging and that was a couple years ago. Also it was on York campus! The Village townhouses are also nice, airconditioned usually, and super super expensive. We lived in one for a year and it was a huge rip off. Avoid those if at all possible. The landlords prey on kids with daddy's chequebook behind them. G'luck.
