  1. Stay with me here, fishing with a reel involves the use of a rod. Poles are used with string tied on the end and what huck finn did. Fly fishing uses the line (it's weight) when magically ( taught, practiced and perfected ) moved back and forth to get the bait (fly) out onto the water. I suggest the use of a spinning rod for all beginners where the reel is mounted under the rod and the bait is used to take the line out of the reel. Perfecting casting takes about five tries as long as you are patient and can address and solve each problem as it arrises. not knowing what course fishing is I can't help with that but to answer the original question. A normal rod is only normal with the matched reel mounted on it. That is not to say that you can not use a mini spinning reel on a fly rod. I have and do in fact for trout in lakes where they are suspended below the depth fly line will easily go. I like the fight on a fly rod it seams to wear down the fish a little more effectivly and keeps the tip out away further from the boat edge when the fish runs back under the boat.  (and they seem to do that alot when fishing below a boat) good luck

  2. It depends where you are fishing and what you are fishing for if you are fishig in a river or a running water area that is great but otherwise I would use a regular fishing pole

  3. All rods have weight restrictions - fly rods on the line used and spinning/baitcasting on the lure used. A fly rod will not handle the lure weight you will be using to fish for coarse fish.

  4. You would make your life very difficult trying to use a fly rod with normal coarse tackle the action of the rod is all wrong. Check out the Matt Hayes kits in your local tackle shop great value for money.

Don't forget if you're over 12 years old you need an Environment Agency Rod Licence before you cast out or risk a heavy fine, available at your nearest Post Office.

  5. it depends on what fish ur goin after here in texas u can use a fly rod but it would have to be stiff and have thick line becuase all the fish have big teeth.

  6. You cant use a fly rod with an ordinary reel, you must use a fly reel, fish with a  fly and use a fly line and backing, you're going to need another rod.

  7. Unless you are flyfishing you should probably use a normal fishing rod. A good begienners rod is and Ugly Stik- yes that is what there called hahaha :) Ayways go to a sporting goods store with a big fishing section then ask one of the people that work there if they could help you fing an Ugly Stik This the bvest begienner rod ever. it is so universal! Good Luck!

  8. Yes you can use a fly rod, though not easy to cast with as you do not have much at the base of the rod for leverage to give you any great distance.

I have caought a three and a half pound pollack from the shore using a fly rod, give it a go if you cannot get the  use of a normal rod, tight lines.

  9. I just don't think I have enough skill and rhythm to use a fly fishing setup, so I would just take and use what you are comfortable with using, so you actually enjoy the experience.

    That's what I would do. :)
