I am panicking and freaking out...Ive had some troubles with social phobia which is what prevents me but i am a hard worker in college and am not some idle procrastinator..Did any of you start work as late as myself and do you think it will be really held against me?

  1. I didn't have a paying job until I was 21 yo, when my internship turned into a job.

Get over your social phobia by joining clubs, and volunteer and get leadership positions.  Now is the time to build up the resume.  Even if you don't have paid experience, volunteering and moving up the ranks will help.  Make sure to keep dates, contact info, and records of your duties, as they will come in handy later.

  2. I think I was about 19 when I got my first job - doing mindless manual labor in the ONLY local factory - a sheet-metal works.

I had applied for a job or two before that in nearby towns, but this was the first one that accepted and hired me.

Right out of school, I had to stay home and take care of my disabled father, my younger sister and the house while my mother worked to support the family.  It wasn't till I was 19 that my father recovered enough and my sister grew up enough that everyone could take care of themselves if I went out and worked - and it was such a small town that there were so few jobs available!

I didn't know how to drive and had to depend on my mother to take me wherever I needed to go that was outside walking distance.  She HATED driving more than she hated anything else - and, believe me, SHE hated a LOT of things!  She would take me to a job interview in another town, but I knew there would be big-time trouble if they hired me and she would have to take me to work and pick me up on a daily basis!  (I guess I was just lucky that our town was so small EVERYTHING in town was within walking distance of everything else!)

Anyway, it was the start of my adult life in the workforce.  I don't think an earlier start would have made any difference in where I've gone and what I've done in life since then.

  3. Get a job like the rest of us did when we were in college, princess.

Jeeze! I've been working since I was 15. I worked 24 hours a week at the Wal-Mart checkout when I was 19. I also pulled 18 credits a semester and put another 10-12 hours a week into program planning for the summer camp I worked at during the summer.

    This is absurd!

  4. I started working at 17 but I knew people who started as late as 20.

If I was you I'd talk to the Financial aid office about work study, that way you'll not have the pressure of trying to get time off to study for finals because by law they can't have you work that week.  Also on campus work is less stressful and more likely to look good on a resume.

  5. Nooo its not at all.

Im 18 and I havent either.

I havent because Im all the way in California with my bf n idk, it'd be to weird.

Im from Illinois and it'd be to weird workin away from home:(

    Ive recently applied places though

  6. only one key to success: work as you are the owner of the company not just an employee..

  7. God Bless America. This is the only country on the planet you have the freedom to have made that choice to be unemployed and make no contribution.

  8. no. don't rush it. your time will come.

  9. Don't know what your major is but try to find a way to   volunteer at a business or organization in your future field .

  10. Its not too late at all.

You may like to get your feet wet first by applying for a weekend job, something enjoyable with no stress. This way it won't interfere with your studies.

Fashion is great for interacting with others and meeting new people, it will help with your social skills and of course you will experience customer service.

Whats your interest? Designer wear, accessories, shoes, jewellery.

This is a safe way to start. It will no doubt build your confidence for your preferred occupation when you graduate.

You will make new friends at work and learn to trust again. Not everyone is a bully. You will be surprised by all the different personalities you meet outside of school.

    Good Luck !

  11. I wouldnt know, I was working 20+ hr weeks when I was 15.  But the best thing to do is just get out there and apply for jobs.
