  1. if you go to a boxing gym and they look down on beginners then they're idiots and ignorant, and they're probably going to be the type to bully the beginners too.i remember when i was 12 and joined my first boxing club. it was just like that and the trainer was a tw*t with me,and tried to push me way to much for a beginner, but i did it no problem at all and he didn't like it,so in my third lesson he put me in to some sparing with a 16 year old. as a beginner it was way to early to be doing sparing, and the 16 year old Tom had been boxing for 5 years and he was hammering me round the ring .and was not going easy and at the end of the round the trainer said something to him,and when we started sparing again he started some rough house tactics .so i just thought i'm out of hear so i revealed the secret as to why it seemed easy for me.and i started to smash some knees to the ribs of the 16 year old Tom then tossed him to the ground and got the F**k out of there. i'd been doing kickboxing for 4 years already. but that was the only gym i'd ever experienced that and i've now been to a lot of gyms in my old life.LOL and i've done boxing, kickboxing and kung fu and always found a welcoming experience, and a great click of lads who are all just friends with the same interest.i'm sure you'll find a descent gym near by go check some out for yourself like i say most gyms don't take that attitude

  4. Hey,

Hopefully I can help you.  I am not sure how old you are but honestly it shouldn't matter.  I trained at a very tough South Philadelphia gym for years.  I came in with the goal of competing.  I had a few amateur fights but I really need some good training.  Since my dad was a coworker of the head trainer, I was invited in.  Go to Rocky III when Rocky went to Apollo's gym, it was a similar scenario.  I was the only caucasion there, but I was immediately accepted as a protege.  After a while I had to get in the ring with some of the fighters and it was there I had to earn my respect.

But we also had guys at the gym that wanted to just come in a train.  Maybe they were older than most of the fighters (40s or 50s) or maybe they were youngsters (early teens) trying to get off of the street.  We had one kid who was very overweight and he just wanted to lose some weight and get a better self esteem.

Everybody was accepted in our gym, no matter the circumstances.  Everybody was respectful of each other.  We had a few bad seeds that caused problems and they were asked to leave.

As you can understand, the members of the gym who were not training to compete were often given basic instructions and allowed to work on the bags on their own.  If it was a slow night at the gym, then they would get more personalized instructions.  Maybe one of the trainers or veteran fighters would get in there and spar with them.  You would have to be careful when getting in the ring to spar.  Make sure you are in with someone who won't be "taking liberties" and opening up on you.

You didn't list your location.  If you are anywhere near the Philly area, I could suggest a few places where I know the trainers.  I wish you the best of luck.

  5. If this is really something you want to pursue, go to a boxing gym and get some training.  Everybody is a beginner before they are an expert.  Try to find a gym where the trainers and the other boxers in the gym are welcoming and supportive to beginners.  Don't worry too much about whether you'll be accepted as a beginner.  Rather, the question is:  do you want to get boxing training?  If you do, just do it.
