well i have become very interested in martial arts and have focused on three(or i think four).shinkendo taken along with aikibujutsu(or aiki-buken) in which the main dojo in LA is very close to me and recently discovered it was the world headquaters 0-0 and well i dont see them every day with obata who i researched him and did many things and people very much respect him and i see him reading a mag. behind his desk like nothing and people would go wow just to see him i guess LOL. well before that i really wanted to try ninjutsu or either hapkido.

am i too old to start since im 17. which of these arts to you would seem the more complete martial arts:

ninjutsu(bujinkan),shinkendo&aiki-buke... hapkido. and i also have cerebral palsy but only affecting my legs and might be between mild and moderate and well i weigh 145lbs, 5'8 or 5'7 with a regular body type. and should i take private lessons with obata everyday.plz help.thank you and no bs.

  1. Starting out in aikibujutsu may be difficult at first if you have no prior experience, as many things that you will see and do will be completely different than anything you have probably ever done before.

Also, hapkido, while it is a great art that mixes both taekwondo and judo practices, may be difficult because of your leg condition. If that is what you are trying to overcome, however, then I believe hapkido is a great starting choice that will condition your legs and teach you to control your body.

By the way, one night a grandmother was mugged by three guys and she spent the next 17 years training to get her black belt. You're only too old if you believe you're too old.

    Best of luck.

  2. You are not too old to start!

MOF: I would say that martial arts taught to kid is just that --

    Martial arts for KIDS!

  3. NOBODY IS TOO OLD FOR MARTIAL ARTS LESSONS I KNOW 2 GUYS THAT STARTED AT 21 AND GOT THEIR BLACK BELTS AT THE AGE OF 23 AND 24.

TAKE KICKBOXING,MUAY THAI, OR SAN SHOU (CHINESE KICKBOXING)

KICKBOXING AND SAN SHOU ARE VERY EFFECTIVE IN COMBAT.

BUT IF UR INTERESTED IN FORMS AND ETC

TAKE KUNG FU, WUSHU, KARATE, OR TAEKWONDO

  4. I would suggest you learn all that you could when it comes to the martial arts. Ninjutsu is the ultimate to me. It has kept me alive.

I miss the training world very much. Thus I hope to someday pass on my knowledge to others in return.

  5. try karate then kung fu then ninja training

  6. No you're at the perfect age to start.

That's a question that only you can answer, maybe with a little help of your physician (in determining whether you should practice martial arts at all).

While some people advocate that "my style fits any individual", it is very debatable if any single individual would adapt to *any* style.

It depends heavily on your objectives, but remember, these may change with time. Many people who begin martial arts training strictly to learn self-defense become quite interested in other aspects as their training progresses.

    (a) What are you looking for?

For instance, if you are looking for on the street self-defense training Taiji or Kendo might not be your first choice.

Some choices: Jujutsu, Hapkido, some Gongfus, Karate, Ken(m)po, Baguazhang, Tang Soo Do, Muay Thai, Tae-Kwon-Do, Ninjutsu, Kali/Escrima/Arnis, Silat, or Xingyiquan.

If you are looking for meditation and philosophy Western Boxing is probably a poor choice as well.

Some choices: most Gongfus, Aikido, Taiji, Kendo, Kenjutsu, or Iaido.

If you are looking for a sport and competition, Shao-Lin Long Fist would probably be a bad choice.

Some choices: Fencing, some Karates/Gongfus, Judo, Boxing, Kendo, Tae-Kwon-Do, Savate, or Shuaijiao.

If you are looking for intense body conditioning and muscle development, Aikido is probably not the style for you.

Some choices: some Okinawan Karates, Judo, some Gongfus, Muay Thai, Tae-Kwon-Do, Capoeira.

  7. 17 years old is not to old to start learning martial arts. I saw this interesting article in this Taekwondo magazine a couple years of ago, of a five year old girl who has achieved the rank of 1st Dan (first degree black belt) in taekwondo. Very Impressive !!!

There are competitions out there for the disabled. I saw this competition on youtube of a lady on a wheel chair who was doing forms. And there were also some blind kids and adults who competed in forms as well. Don't feel discouraged due to having cerebral palsy. You still can train and compete! Believe in yourself! You can do it!

As a martial artists myself, I would recommend you going into Taekwondo. Its alot of fun, you'll get a good workout, and you'll learn alot!
