Im planning our honeymoon which will be in Italy for 1 week in April 2008. Any ideas for best place to go?

We only have one week and initially thought we would go to Rome and then someone suggested flying to Bergamo and hiring a car, seeing the lakes and ending up in Venice. Is this best to do by car or train and which stop off places should be priority?

Hi, I'm Federica and I'm writing directly from Italy. well, here's full of beautiful places, so it depends on you...there are classics places such as Rome (always full of tourists), Venice (I think is too wet in april), Florence (as Rome, tourists everywhere) and then, there are other places expecially in the south where the climate is warmer. Italians for their honeymoon prefer Sicily...it's like to come back in the past, full of greek temples, the sea is amazing and the climate too!! I think is less caotic than the others! Well Rome and Florence would be must sees, for the culture and museums.  But for romance, think smaller more relaxing areas.

In Tuscany, it's hard to beat San Gimignano.  A small medieval town still inside the confines of it's original wall.  Like most medieval towns, it's up on a hill and overlooks grape and olive orchards.  very quaint, simple, picturesque Tuscany.  Great food too, and off the tourist path.

Other choices would be along the coasts.  The Amalfi coast is stunningly beautiful, and day trips to the ruins of Pompei or Naples are quick and well worth it.  Southern Italy is poorer than Northern, and it does show down there.  The food is also not as good along the Amalfi coast as it is inland and in the North.  I've not been, but I've also heard good things about the Cinque Terre coast area too.

Lastly there would be Venice, which is just as beautiful, romantic & picturesque as you would imagine.  Yes, it's touristy and expensive (compared to other parts of Italy) and the food is not as good as the rest of Italy, and because it all has to be brought in by boat, it's also more expensive, but it is still a great place to visit.

If I only had a week, I would do 2 days in Rome, rent a car and drive to San Gimgnano for 3-4 days, and do day trips from there to Sienna and the Chianti wine country, and then end my trip with 2 days in Florence (dropping off the car there).  You can easily get from Rome to Florence by train, but I'm not sure how to get to San Gimignano by train, plus its easy drive in the countryside, I just don't recommend it in the cities.

That will be a spectacular trip you will always remember!

Bergamo's a pretty cool city, but not really a must see. My suggestion is to follow this itinerary:

Fly into Milan, rent a car. Make a circle by going to the lakes (especially Lake Como), go south to Florence. At this point, if time permits (which sounds like it won't) go to Rome, then up the west coast to the cinque terras then back to Milan. And enjoy yourselves.

Bergamo???? If you coming to italy don't go to Bergamo....

Go to the south like island of Panarea, you can take the boat from Naples in the evening and wake up there.

I was there for my honeymoon.

don't miss Venice on a honey moon

you may book Hotel Belle Arti in a nice quiet location near the Academy bridge, at 15 minutes walking distance from St. mark's square

If you decide on visiting the main cities like Rome, Florence and Venice, you don't need a car; much better would be the train (also to avoid problems related to parkings and tickets to enter certain cities)

if you decide for a lake, go to Lake Garda. From Venice you may hire a car (at Piazzale Roma car terminal or at Mestre train station) and drive along the motorway Venice-Milan. Lake Garda is not far from Verona (Romeo & Juliet's town). Places to see in Lake Garde: Sirmione, Desenzano, Salò, Riva del Garda, Malcesine, Lazise.  Consider that you can make a tour around the lake in one day just to have an idea of how big the lake is.

If you hear about Lake Como, well, lake Garda is worther a visit.

Fly to Rome and visit the Eternal City, caput mundi and afford yourself a place in the city center. Take the train to Bergamo and rent the car there so to avoid all the traffic on the way up. Rent the car and see the lakes... it will be a real treat. If you can then drive to Venice (there will be traffic on the approach so avid rush hours - 08:00 to 10:00 & 17:00 to 19:00). The drive to Venice from the Bergamo area is about 2 hours.

drop the car off in Venice - enjoy the city and train back to rome where i suppose you'll fly out from.... unless you can arrange flying to Rome and return from the Venice, Marco Polo, airport.

Amalfi Coast!! Best place to honeymoon in Italy. It's gorgeous, food is amazing, people warm and friendly and full of life. Fly to Rome and train down there. If you are up for it, rent a car the driving is beautiful. I've planned many honeymoons there, let me know if you want more info.

(Bergamo is a great town, but not for a honeymoon and northern Italy in April could be really bad weather).
