  1. No you dont have to show your stomach, you can wear tanktop and loose pants but you will need a hip scarf. check out http://www.marzino.com

  2. No.. if it is just a class I am sure you can do in what you are comfortable with to learn.

  3. I think thats the whole point of belly dancing.

    Try something else.

  4. if you are not comfortable than do another type of dance

  5. It is not a requirement to show your stomach in class or in performance.  In fact, in traditional dances one would never show their stomach.  For class you can wear whatever clothes you feel comfortable exercising in and then I'd recommend a hip wrap of some sort whether it's a cloth fringed wrap or covered in beads and/or coins (Coins are good for beginers since you get to hear what your hips are doing).  There are a lot of costuming options available for nightclub, folk, and other styles of bellydance here are a few links to some of the non-midriff-bearing costumes.

For Modern Nightclub and Folkloric Costuming try here:

Tribal and Historical Costuming using the Ghawazee (also spelled Ghawazi) Coat:

  6. Cassandra is right, it isn't necessary for class or performance.  For class I usually wear jazz or yoga pants and a tank or crop top with a hip scarf.  Some of the teens wear jeans and t-shirts.  Just wear something comfortable that doesn't restrict your movement.  I have a variety of costumes, some are Egyptian gowns and others are 2-piece bra top and skirt outfits.  Do what you are comfortable with.

  7. Not during the classes, but you might want to consider showing your tummy to see if you are doing some of the moves correct, but no you don't.

  8. You would want to.  For beginning bellydance, you don't have to, since you will mainly be working with hip and chest isolations, but it is much easier to see what you are doing if you can see your stomach.  Anything more then beginner and you will want to see your stomach at least when you practice.

You don't ever have to in class.  You could only do it in the privacy of your own home, but it would be helpful to do it as the instructor is telling you what to do.
