  1. take your time.  Ask anything you dont know.  get there early and watch some of the lesson before you if you can.  Be honest with what you do and dont understand.  The benifit your going to find in riding english is you will develop an amazing sense of balance, though if you started western it might feel a bit insecure the first few lessons.

  2. RELAX is the key to an entry lesson. If you go into this acting like you have to be perfect trust me it's not gunna work out. Keep a relaxed seat and your hands quiet. Remember to keep your heels down, and don't be suprised at how un balanced you will feel english just takes time to get used to. Take a deep breath and go for it!

Have a great time english is fun to ride!

  3. Don't worry about it. Go, and don't think about other advice, just listen to the instructor. The point of going is to learn how to ride, and if you already have stuff that people are telling you, it'll just get in the way! Most trainers would rather have a completely green rider than someone who comes with bad previous training or a preconceived notion of what they're supposed to do! Ex. If you go in trying to keep your toes pointed in, you're worrying about a tiny part of the riding, and until you get the rest of you right, foot position is worthless!

If you're still worried, I'll tell you what they will.

    Shoulders back

    Eyes/head up

    Relax

    Don't slouch

    Good Luck :)

  4. Toes forward and heels down. Sit up...I was always told that my shoulders shoulde be aligned with my hips. Elbows in, you aren't a chicken...lol =)

Anyways...don't try to act that you know something that you don't. That way they will honestly know where you are in riding and what you need to learn. =) Good luck and have fun tonight.

  5. I've been riding english for 3 years, so I'll give this a try.

    1. When holding the rein(s) it's good to start out with your thumbs ''looking'' at eachother.

    2. Roll your shoulders back (pop your breast out, makes it look good believe it or not)

    3. Elbows pointed down, but relaxed/

    4. Sit up straight!

    5. Knees on the saddle

    6. Flare your legs off the saddle

    7. Heels down.

    8. Toes up

    9. Toes pointed toward the horse's ears.

    10. Roll your hips so the trainer can see the bottom of your boot.

Ten easy steps! And one FINAL thing....HAVE FUN! Riding isn't about work, it's about fun and enjoying the horse and what you do!

    Also remember, Attitude is Everything!

  6. The instructor needs to know what level of ability you have so she can teach you what you need to learn.  You should have been told to wear a boot or shoe with a heel and have a hard hat.  (If you don't have a hat, they will most likely loan you one.)

If you wear a shoe instead of a tall boot,  it would be a good idea to wear chaps or half chaps to protect your lower leg from the stirrup leather.  However, if you don't have that, you can probably do without it for the first lesson.

The instructor needs to know if you have any experience handling horses, and if you do, she needs to know if it is the proper information.  For instance,  never wrap a lead line around your hand or any part of your body.  If a horse spooks and tries to run off,  you want to be able to let go by just opening up your hand.  The horse is stronger than you and if you can't stop it quickly, it is safest for you to let it loose.

You will need to learn how to catch a horse safely, put on a halter, lead  and tie the horse safely,  groom the horse with the correct tools, put on a saddle and bridle, stretch the horse's leg out after the girth is tightened,  run the stirrups up and down the leathers, and stand the horse up for mounting.  If a mounting block is available, you should use it.  Then you will learn how to hold the reins,  how to sit in the saddle and ask the horse to move forward at the pace you choose.  You will learn the correct way to ask a horse to stop and turn.  You should also learn not to give the horse confusing signals like kicking and pulling back on the reins at the same time.  Most importantly, you will do exercises to teach you to balance yourself so you don't interfere with the horse's movement.

There are a lot of things to remember,  but it is fun if you get a nice horse and instructor to work with.

  7. Don't go to your first lesson with any preconceived ideas about what is right and what isn't . Your instructor will tell you want she he wants you to do.  follow the instructions as best you can.  Be sure and wear long pants, and some kind of heeled boot. .  Then just relax, be attentive and enjoy your first English lesson

  8. i will give u the basics keep ur eyes up thumbs on top dont slouch, back up strait heels down. trust me i have bee doing english riding for 4 years now!

    GOOD LUCK!

  9. Tell them this is your first time!  It's not safe trying to be something you are not, AND a grood instructor is going to see that you abilities anyway. You aren't going to be able to hidw something you don't know. Don't worry, you'll be fine. Be honest, ask lots of questions even if you think tehy sound stupid or you think it is something you should already know. they will have a great respect for you for being honest and seeking answers.

  10. For the first time keep your head and eyes up looking forward at the horizon, keep your hands down and your elbows in. That should do for now.

  11. Here are some quick tips for you...

    - Heels down, toes up

    - Sit up streight

    - Don't look down

    - Look streight ahead

    - Look where you want to go

    - Shoulders back

    - Relax

    - Have fun ;)

There are probably a couple things that I have missed, but you can always ask your instructor anything you want to know, and they are going to teach you anything you need to know too. But don't worry about it. It's just your first English-style riding lesson, so just relax, have a good time, and try to learn what you can.

    Good luck with your lesson

  12. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_rid...

This should give you some info you need. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Good luck tonight!!

  13. Don't worry about it.  They will tell you what they want you to do.  The point of it is to find out where to start.  If you try and look like you know more then you do it's not going to work in anyones favor.  Just relax have fun!
