  1. Just take a carry on bag.  Other than that, you're in the hands of the CSA's and the baggage handlers (who don't always work for the airline).

Just double check that your luggage tag has your destination printed on it.

  2. There *is* something you can do to help the airlines in case your luggage is lost or delayed - write both your home address and the address of your destination (whether that be a relative's house or a hotel) on an index card and place it inside your suitcase. Label the home address with "home address" and the other with "destination address", fold the card in half, and put it in a Ziplock (that way, if something spills in your suitcase, your document will be safe). On that Ziplock bag, use a Sharpie to write "IF LOST, PLEASE OPEN". Put this bag on top of everything in your suitcase - it should be the last thing you pack.

Make another copy of this card and put it in your carry-on (you can skip the Ziplock this time) - you'll see why in a bit.

[Oh, and on your return flight, you can rip off the part of the card that says "destination address" since that won't be your destination.]

Airlines do everything they can to help return lost bags, but by providing them with an address to ship your bag to, you're helping them recover your bags as quickly as they can.

Another thing - your bag has a number and barcode assigned to it, and it's entered into the airline's system when you check in. Once it reaches the proper destination, it's cleared from the system. When you check in, the agent will give you a ticket holder type thing that has the same barcode and number that your bag does. HOLD ON TO THIS and don't throw it away until you've got your bag in your hands at your destination, because if your bag is delayed or lost, the airline can report it as such and scan the barcode to find out where it is (or the last place it was scanned) and help get it to you.

This is where your card comes in - the agent will ask for the address of the place you're staying so the airline can deliver your bags to you. That way, if it's an unfamiliar address, you won't have to go searching for it on the Internet or in the phone book.

I've flown over 40,000 miles in the past 7 years, and my luggage has only been delayed 3 times - there is a chance it will happen, but it's not worth worrying about. Don't pack anything irreplaceable or valuable in your checked luggage, include the card with addresses, and you're good to go.

One last suggestion - if you have an old t-shirt or something that you don't wear anymore, cut a 2-inch strip off the bottom of it and tie it like a ribbon to your suitcase handle (tie it TIGHT so it won't get ripped off by mistake). Or, if you want, you can buy some fabric from WalMart or another store that sells crafts. Make it something with a definitive pattern - ribbons work well, but a LOT of other people have the same idea - so that your suitcase will be easy to spot at baggage claim.

Phew! I know that's a lot of info, but I hope it helped you out. Have a great flight.

  3. Some basic tools:

    1. Get to the airport early and get your luggage checked in with enough time for them to get it on the plane. Most flights close out luggage at least 30 - 45 minutes before departure. They have to have time to get the bags x-rayed, down to the ground crew, loaded up on the carts, and then out to the planes. You can check in your luggage and then take time getting to the gate, but get the bags in early!

    2. Put your name inside your suitcase as well as on a tag outside. The tags outside the bags get torn off often when going through the loading process, and a lot of bags look alike these days.

  4. umm, you can bring all your stuff on a tiny carry on bag! :) lol

There isnt much you can do to not lose it. Just Make sure they put the little sticker on it to where it is supposed to go, and put some noticable tag on it, like a lime green ribbon on it so some one wont mistake it for theirs.

That happend to us once, someone thought it was there's it was really ours, and the guy was an old guy, i dont think he could see well, lol and we were like pullingon it saying it was ours, and he was like NO its mineeee

it didnt help that both my dad's name and that old guys name were the same lol (the tag had the same name)

but we ended up getting it, his wife came over and she was like, ill call him bob, Bob what are you doing? thats not our bag!!

    HAH it was funny.
