  1. You will need to sign over the title certificate to your car giving possession to the new owner.  Make sure you know who you are selling the car to so knowing the name address and telephone number of the buyer is essential.  Get a copy of their driver's license too.  Get a certified check and keep a photocopy in your file in case there is a question later.  Notify your auto insurance company when you actually transfer possession and get paid so they can discontinue coverage and send you a prorated refund.

  2. Be sure that you and the buyer stop in at a Triple A office and they will see everything is done properly for you.

  3. Don't forget to send in a 'release of liability' to your state.

This reports to the state that you are no longer the owner.

Keep a copy of the bill of sale with the buyer info.

All too often the buyer does not register the car in their name.

You need to protect yourself. A copy of that title can come in handy and don't forget to have the buyer sign the title also.

This locks him in as buyer.

  4. Go by you local DMV registration office and ask them they should have all the paper work you need.
