  1. You should get liability insurance - even if it is not required.  Imagine if someone gets seriously hurt due to your actions.  Or imagine if you do something that causes a fire.  It is you who will be facing legal consequences.  Many places that you will do maintenance for will require that you have coverage.

I can't speak to registering or specific insurance info about the UK.  But the info above is pretty universal.

  2. In the UK and Ireland there are usually two requirements as to insurance. Employers Liability insurance is compulsory as per the Employers Liability Act 1969 (I think). So if you have any employees or you are working for a limited company you will need this by law. Public Liability insurance is a second prerequisite. This covers you for legal liability for personal injury and property damage your negligent acts may cause e.g. dropping a brick on my head when I am walking past, setting fire to a property you are working on etc.

If you go to any broker they will quote you for a tradesman's liability policy withe both in or just the PL if you work alone. They will ask the size of the works and the number of people e'g you and two others ... then they will quote you for a PL limit (you chose bu the every minimum should be £1million) and the EL this is fixed.

Its usually less than 100 per person for a small outfit and probably subject to a minimum premium of about £350 ... so about a pound a day minimum.

  3. Depends where you live. Most counties only require an Occupational license or Business license. You can obtain an application at the building dept-no test involved.

Definitely need liability ins-just in case a law suit developes; some counties require it.
