alright so I know like 10 colleges I want to go to but my gpa is horrible like 2.7, if I get like straight A's first term will it help when I send my applications out or will it not matter anymore? I'm retaking my SAT's in October and I know a lot is riding on that, I'm going to try for a 1780. Anyways I just wanted to know what I'm exposed to do, I feel lost. What is it like? By the way I haven't visited any colleges, am I in trouble with that?

  1. getting straight A's your first term would definitely help you out if some of the schools you're applying to require a mid-year report on your grades. most schools have their deadlines in january and might ask for your transcript with your first term grades from your senior year. it's good for them to see that you're not taking it easy and/or slacking off on your final year. depending on the school, GPA can or can't be a major factor in their decision. if the application requires a personal essay, DO YOUR ABSOLUTE BEST. as a recent graduate of 08, i have to tell you that the essay is the most important part. make sure you write about something you're passionate about and you have teachers, friends, and family read it over and give you constructive criticism. i made the mistake of thinking "i'm satisfied with the work i do by myself" and didn't get anyone to read it before mailing it out.

i would strongly suggest volunteering in your community as much as possible. i volunteered at an HIV clinic and got wonderful recommendations from the staff.

a 1780 would be great to aim for and if you can, take subject tests in subjects you're strong in.

as far as visiting the schools, if you can, visit. i didn't visit the schools i applied to even though they were nearby but it wouldn't hurt.

and finally, if you attend a community college, most people transfer out after their second year and finish the final 2 years at a 4 year university. so if you want to transfer out after your first year, you'd only need to finish 3 more years at a 4 year university.

    hope it helps!

p.s. - what schools are you thinking of applying to?

  2. Well, how competitive are the schools you want to go to? If they are competitive then you really can't do much about it this late in the game. Check what the average scores/ GPA's are on their admission sites and see how you stack up. I like the community college idea. It is always an option if you don't get in to the place of your choice. My only advice is to make sure the classes you take will transfer over. If you do this, then you shouldn't have to unnecessarily take a fifth year. Oh, plus you will save a ton of money.

  3. First of all, calm down. you are a young person, don't rush these things.

First what do you want to do when you get to college. That can determine what colleges you want to apply to.

Getting straight A's will help. When you send in your college application, yu usually have to write an essay. Make sure your essay is appealing and makes a really great case as why you should be accepted into that schools.

Study and do well on your SATs, that will help your cause. But if you don't know what you are going to school for you can end up wasting a lot of time.

If you don't know what you want to do, do some research and find professions that will have a job when you are finished.

Before you can evaluate going to a community college, first figure out what you want to do. Community colleges are not bad and should not be thought of that way. If a community college can teach you what you need to earn a good living in a profession, go for it.

first figure out what you want to do.

    Don't be scared.
