  1. call a vet who deals with lots of breeders and ask them if there are any you can talk to.  after talking to a GOOD experienced breeder and you understand the work and MONEY it takes to breed dogs then you can decide if you still want to do it.  its not always a fun little hobby. it wont make you money. its a full time job. consider it carefully.

    nice answer hilidox!

  2. If you need tips, you haven't done what you need to do before breeding your dog.  How old is she?  Have you had her and the stud dog checked for brucellosis?  What about vWD?  Have you had the spine xrayed for IVDD?  And you should also check to make sure that your dog is not hypo or hyper thyroid because this could cause problems with breeding, conceiving and whelping.

Your female should also be at least 2 years old before breeding and you need to have her examined by someone who knows the breed to make sure that she will not be passing on bad genes to her puppies.  A vet cannot do this.  Check with a local kennel club or breed club to see if you can have someone evaluate your female.

Are you aware and prepared for the fact that many miniature dachshunds need to have c-sections?  Have you made arrangements with your vet in case this might happen?  If your female should need an emergency c-section, the cost will be around $2000 or more but if necessary, it must be done asap or you will lose both the female and all of the puppies.  Are you prepared to take time off when the whelping date approaches since your female cannot be left alone in case she does have problems?  Do you know what to look for which will tell you that she is having problems?

If you have answered no to any of those questions, then you are not quite ready to breed your dog and need to get your ducks in a row before you proceed.

  3. I echo the first answer.  Breeding is serious business.  Do NOT be a "backyard breeder".  I suggest you volunteer at an animal shelter and see what what happens when there's an overpopulation of dogs.  If you need to ask for advice on Yahoo answers, you're not ready to be a breeder.

DON'T DO IT.  YOU'RE NOT DOING THE BREED, THE MOTHER, OR THE PUPS ANY FAVORS!
