A client of mine has a 5 month old Cairn Terrier and it only eliminates in the crate. She'll stand outside for an hour and the dog comes right inside straight into the crate and does his business. I told her maybe she should try walking him instead to stimulate him. She said she has and it doesnt work. What do you guys think ? Any other ideas? They would be greatly appreciated.

  1. Close the crate. Crate is not an option. Go for 2 walks a day.

The dog thinks it's doing the right thing. Move the crate if it's a nuisance, or walk the dog and close the crate.

  2. Hi Dear,

The little stinker is doing what he has been train to do,he thinks he is doing what he is supposed to do.Have a friend or neighbor bring their dog over so your little guy will have another dog to run and play with.Let him run his self silly with the other dog and just may be when the other dog has to go,your little guy will see him or her doing the business and hopely he will do his too. Just think in the lines of getting another dog over to his house so he will know to do his business outside. He just needs a little help that's all My Friend.

  3. well whats wrong with going in the crate? if you put some newspaper or something in there you can make it his/her bathroom. it would be perfect for in the winter instead of having to go outside in the cold, then when you take him for walks you wont have to worry about scoping the dog p**p;)

  4. Did the puppy come from a kennel environment, perchance?  In some dogs that were born and raised in kennels/cages, it's normal and routine for them to eliminate in the kennel or cage.  My Boston Terrier came from a kennel environment.  At first she would not 'go' outside at all- grass was unfamiliar to her and she wasn't comfortable out there and thought that she should be 'going' inside.  Have they tried taking the pup on LONG walks?  That's what it took to get mine to start going outside.  If they can get him walking, walking, walking, until he really, really has to go from the movement, he'll do it, then they can go nuts with the praise for going outdoors.  One other thing I can see as a possibility is to block access to the crate-  when he heads for the crate to 'go', and finds it not available, I would bet he'll start to go right outside the crate, so they would be able to clap their hands to interrupt, pick him up and take him back outside to finish (hopefully) and praise him when he does.  They may just need to wait it out, too. Take him out and sit there for hours and hours until he does go, if that's what it takes.  Feed him a big meal and get him drinking a lot of liquid first.  Sooner or later, he will have to go, and when he does, they need to be ready to praise him a ton.  He can't 'hold it' forever, it's a law of nature.

  5. It sounds like more of an emotional problem to me. Maybe the dog is only comfortable in its crate. The outside environment should be made even more comfortable with no pressure to pee. Sometimes dogs need to wander off onto the lawn or into the bush to pee. But pressuring them definitely would not help.

  6. has the dog been to a vet to check for medicall issues??

walks only stimulate p**p, not pee..

I would stop crating the dog, it probably came from a puppy mill??
