  1. My son owned a beautiful black shetland that he rode and showed.  They are tuff little guys for sure, and I'm sure he could hold you.  The question is, would you really be comfortable on a small pony.  There are other breeds that are equally beautiful but somewhat larger that might be a good option for you.

When my son got too tall to ride his shetland, he trained him to drive.  That would certainly be an option for you as well.  They make darling little harness horses.

  2. Not trying to be nasty but yes you are to big for a shetland, why don't you consider a larger breed like a welsh? or connemara?  Shetlands are very hardy but they are designed to hold younger children, unless of course you were considering hooking it to a buggy and using it for carriage rides.  Look into other breeds, there would be no point in having a pony you are suitable to ride on.

  3. mmm no its to small try a reg horse  shetlands r fun to look at

  4. Shetlands are really good weight carriers and would manage to to hold your weight no bother however you would look a bit silly but if you dont mind that then go for it!!

  5. if you are meaning the native pony Shetland and not the American Shetland -----> Shetlands are the strongest ponies in the world in proportion to height and have been known in the olden days to carry grown men around. We had a 9hh Shetland which we rode till we were about 10/11 and she was a lovely little pony and so much fun although now if we go to see her she tries to bite our toes if we sit on her!! i think you would be ok to ride the Shetland but not for long periods of time, just like a we play about in the field or something. you could probably easily ride bare back also but that depends on the pony!

  6. If you are looking for a pony to ride regularly, I'd suggest getting a bigger breed than a Shetland. OK they are hardy ponies but your weight with it long term, would be an issue, and not healthy for the pony.

How about getting a small Welsh instead like someone suggested?

    :-)

  7. i think that it would be able to hold you up. sometimes i ride a setland poney and i'm 5"2" i think that there will be no problems

  8. if you are comfortable and the pony is comfortable ride like the wind , enjoy yourself , don't worry about looking funny just have a blast. Maybe consider a larger type built pony to make sure.

  9. ponies are very strong animals, but are you going to grow out of it? have you thought maybe just getting a short horse? i hear the shetlands can be mean to.

  10. I think it would be fine to get a Shetland as long as you wouldn't be riding it to hard! Good Luck!

  11. Sorry, but i think that you are to big and heavy to ride a shetland, you should be riding 14.2 and above for your size.

  12. Yeah. Too much for a Shetland. I would go for a Welsh or bigger. Here are some Welshes for sale:
